BEST PRESENT EVER

MailStation by Cidco is among the most rewarding purchases I have ever made. Every bit of necessary technological and practical information was available on the Amazon.com site. Both CIDCO and Amazon.com had made me aware that the machine's maker would also be its sole service provider. MailStation was a Christmas gift to my mother (age 83) who has NEVER even turned on a computer and uses the "hunt and peck" typing method. Since the very simple installation with CIDCO personnel via their (800) number on Christmas Eve, there have been daily messages to children and grandchildren. She and my dad (age 89) are thrilled and feeling very connected. A better present could not have been found. If there is any criticism, it is that perhaps MailStation could have even fewer functions, making for more simplicity of operation. However, this compact, well-designed wonder brought with it a leap into tomorrow for a couple who thought they couldn't.

It is not disclosed on the amazon.com site or the manufacturer's site, (at least I couldn't find it on Cidco's site) that the only ISP option in order to use the Cidco email appliance, is Cidco's email server/service. The monthly minimum monthly premium -- and that's only for email! I bought the appliance for my parents who are computer illiterate and live in a very rural area. They are not computer-sophisticated enough, in my opinion, to be able to get a great deal of help if they were forced to call the manufacturer's techs for help. However, I were able to configure the Cidco email appliance so that my parents could use their small town ISP, and if they should ever have trouble getting email, etc., they would get a free home visits from the local ISP. I called Cidco's tech support to verify that their ISP service was the only method available to use their appliance, and while it took a concerted effort on my part to explain the nature of the pre-programmed features in the ISP config set-up to the tech, the tech finally spoke to his supe and discovered, as I had, that the smpt and pop accounts are programmed for mymailstation.com ONLY. Therefore it is not possible to use an alternative ISP. I strongly feel that this information should be disclosed on the Amazon site so that customers like me would have been saved the grief of discovering the limitations of the machine AFTER PURCHASE and being forced to call for a return-ship number and making the trip to UPS to return the unit after making two tedious calls to Cidco's techs.

Really practicle and useful product. I actually prefer to send and receive email on the MailStation over my PC. Simple, easy and low cost. Makes a great gift to people that have never started using email.
