Search Tips There are over 4.7 million titles in our catalog, and we've made it easy to find every single one! Follow the links below for the type of help you need. Searching for Books
Enter one or more keywords using any combination of the author's name, the book's title, and/or a subject heading. If you use more than one keyword, our search engine will restrict the results to books that each match all the keywords you enter. Here are some examples using Keyword Search:
You can choose among three types of Author Searches by clicking the buttons below the Author field. If you don't choose one, you will be searching by Last, First Name (or Initials). The types of Author Searches are listed from narrowest (most strict) to broadest (least strict). For authors with multiple last names, make sure you use a comma between the last names and the first name (e.g., Nielsen Hayden, Teresa). To search without a first name or initials, type the complete last name, followed by a comma (e.g., Nielsen Hayden,). If this does not find all the books by the author, you might also try searching by the last word of the author's last name (e.g., Hayden). If you discover an author with multiple last names listed by the last word in his or her last name, please e-mail us at catalog-typos@amazon.com and bring it to our attention.
You can choose between two types of Title Searches. If you don't choose one, you will be searching by Title Words.
Getting Started: You can choose between two types of Subject Searches. If you don't choose one, you will be searching by Subject Words.
Solving Problems: Searching by subject is tricky. Books may be indexed under more than one subject. Some books in our database are not indexed by subject at all.
Publisher and/or Publication Date Searches You can tailor your search even further by using our Publisher, Date search tool, accessible in the left-hand margin of our main book search page. You can fill in one or more of the search fields to specify any combination of keywords, publisher, and publication date. To restrict your search to titles by a specific publisher, enter the publisher's name in the appropriate field. To optimize your chances for a successful search, we suggest simply entering the first word of the publisher's name. For example, conduct a search for "O'Reilly" to find all titles by O'Reilly and Associates. Use the Publication, Date search tool to locate titles that were published before, during, or after a particular month or year. You can also enter relevant terms in the Keywords field. For instance, conduct a keyword search for "program" and a publisher search for "O'Reilly" to find all titles by O'Reilly & Associates that feature the keyword "program." Type one or more keywords in the box, either from the name of the author (or illustrator), or from a book's title and/or subject. If you use more than one keyword, our search engine will restrict the results to include only the books that match all the keywords you enter. You can narrow your search to include books written for a particular reading level. If you enter "moon" and select "Ages 0-3," you'll find Goodnight Moon and other moon-related books for very young children. If you enter "moon" and select "Ages 13+," you'll find biographies of Neil Armstrong or books with moon in the title for readers ages 13 and older. Here are some examples of the best ways to search for kids' books:
Searches for Books in Languages Other Than English Our catalog lists books in languages other than English, and although a large proportion of these are in French or Spanish, a number of other languages are represented. Because the titles of these books are listed in the language in which they're printed, the best search strategy is to use the "Author, Title, Subject" search tool; this tool is on our Search page, along with our other search tools. On the "Author, Title, Subject" Search page, enter the author's last name and a word or two from the non-English title. For example, Isaac Asimov's classic I, Robot is available in Spanish--it's listed under the title Yo, Robot, and a search for "Asimov Yo" will find it. It is often easier to extrapolate from examples, so we'll give you some examples first and instructions to follow; the examples may be enough for you to leap right in. Examples:
Instructions: The search language lets you send us complex descriptions of books that you're looking for. You can specify various properties of the book (such as the title), various values for the properties (such as "Alice in Wonderland"), and the relationship between the value and the property (such as "equal" or "less than"). Here are the properties of a book that you can use in your description of what you're looking for: title title word subject subject word author keyword ISBN publication date (pdate) Here are the words you can use to describe the relationship between a given property and a value. Some of the words below are interchangeable: equals greater during is less between isn't greater or equal before starts less or equal after begins higher earlier lower later You can use the words and, or, and not to link different parts of a book description. You can also group properties together using parentheses if that seems necessary to convey the precise meaning of your description. Finally, it's advisable, although not always necessary, to put quotation marks (") around properties such as titles. Titles (and sometimes authors' names and subject category names) may contain words that we recognize as special. For example, looking for a title that includes words such as and, or, or begins will confuse us (even on a good day) unless you put quotation marks around the book's title. You can link to our large listing of audiobooks in a variety of ways. To browse a list of our most popular titles on our Audiobooks category page, simply click on the "Browse Subjects" link at the top of any page, then click on the "Audiobooks" link. You can also search for a particular audiobook by using the search tool located at the bottom of the Audiobooks category page. Finally, you can locate audiobooks by using our "Author, Title, Subject" search tool. This tool may be accessed via the "Book Search" link on our top navigation bar. Simply enter one of the following terms into the Subject field: "audiobooks," "talking books," "audio," or "books on tape." Once you click on "Search Now," you will retrieve a long list of audiobooks. You can narrow the parameters of your search by adding the last name of the author you are trying to find into the Author field, or by adding words from the title you are trying to find into the Title field. All audiobook editions of a specific title will be indicated by the cassette logo to the right of the title on any search results page. You can link to a large listing of CD-ROM titles in our book catalog by executing a Keyword Search for "cd-rom." To narrow your search, try combining this term with the type of CD-ROM that interests you (e.g., "science cd-rom"). Generally, it is useful to set wide parameters for your searches and progressively narrow them if you get listings that are too large. You may also locate CD-ROM titles by using the "Author, Title, Subject" search tool. You can access this tool by clicking on the "Book Search" link in the navigation bar at the top of any page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
