Antarctica : South Pole

90°S

0.3 km (0.2 miles) S of Amundsen-Scott Station, South Pole, Antarctica (maps: street )

#1: South Pole (the real one, not the silly ceremonial one) (visit #1)

(visited by Sarah Kaye and Chuck Kimball)

Two visits so far to this confluence. The first was by Sarah Kaye.

01-Dec-99 -- I've been in Antarctica since the end of August but I just got to the Pole at the beginning of December. It's an interesting place. I'm running radios.

In the aerial view (photo #2) look right and down from the Dome to the small semicircle, that's the shadows of the flags around the ceremonial pole. The geographic pole is just a bit down and to the left.

The next visit was by Chuck Kimball.

26-Jan-2000 -- While working for the US Antarctic Program during the 1999-2000 Summer, I was filling in at the South Pole as a Communications Tech.

This should count as one of the two major points of Confluence, every Longitude and the 90S Latitude converge here.
