Excite@Home Advances Wireless Strategy with Airflash Alliance Continuation of Company's Wireless Strategy Will Bring Users Excite Content Anywhere, Anytime on Handheld Devices
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- September 21, 1999 Excite@Home (Nasdaq: ATHM) today
announced an exclusive alliance with AirFlash, a leading provider of mobile
content and e-commerce, to jointly develop a wireless application service that
combines AirFlash's and Excite@Home's personalized content. A key component of
Excite@Home's wireless strategy, the service will bring consumers anytime,
anywhere access to personalized content from the Excite portal via wireless
devices. The relationship is a significant milestone in Excite@Home's move
into
the wireless/mobile handset arena and continue the company's drive into
'all-band' delivery of Excite content to any device.
"Our relationship with AirFlash will accelerate our ability to partner
quickly and effectively with wireless carriers to bring the best of the Web to
their customers," said Joe Kraus, senior vice-president, content, Excite@Home.
"Mobile applications are key to delivering on the 'All Device' part of our
vision, 'All Band, All Device, All The Time', and these steps continue our
focus on providing our customers with the best personalized content wherever
they are, by whatever means they choose."
WIRELESS APPLICATIONS CORNERSTONE OF COMPANY STRATEGY
Excite@Home and AirFlash will partner to use AirFlash's wireless
technology to build and offer some of the best personalized content for
wireless handsets and other mobile devices. AirFlash and Excite@Home will
provide personalized access to Excite content and applications as well as
location-sensitive information such as AirFlash's proprietary Location-Based
Yellow Pages.
Excite@Home expects to partner with wireless carriers who desire to bring
unique
Web and mobile content to their users. These anticipated partnerships would
allow the company to reach users with most next generation handsets, including
both WML- and HDML-capable devices. In addition, the AirFlash partnership
allows Excite@Home to partner with carriers to enable Excite@Home to make a
subset of its content available to most of the 300 million existing PCS-style
handsets already being used today via SMS. The Excite@Home/AirFlash
services can
be customized to meet the unique requirements of individual carriers.
"AirFlash is extending its leadership as the premier provider of Mobile
Content
& m-Commerce for the new mobile generation," said Rama Aysola, CEO of
AirFlash.com. "As the leading provider of pervasive on-line content on
all-bands, the relationship with Excite@Home marks an ideal relationship.
Together, we are offering mobile content and m-Commerce from AirFlash along
with personalized Web-content from Excite@Home to usher in the New Mobile
Generation."
BRINGING THE MOBILE USER THE INFORMATION THEY WANT
The wireless applications that the two companies co-develop will
initially focus on four core areas for the mobile user:
- Personalized Excite content
Consumers who have personalized an Excite
Start Page will now be able to receive their personalized information -- e.g.,
news alerts, sports scores, stock quotes on the road on their mobile devices.
In addition, they will have access to Excite@Home applications such as Excite
Planner, incorporating a calendar, address-book, to do list, and notepad.
- Mobile content
In addition, content from the Excite Web site will be
augmented with information of specific importance to the mobile user, such as
location-based yellow pages, ATM Finder, traffic reports, and flight status
information.
- Communication services
Excite@Home will make communications services
such as Excite Mail and Excite Voicemail available from mobile devices.
- Mobile e-commerce
Excite@Home will tailor a set of e-commerce
services
specifically to the needs of the mobile user, including such functions as
travel reservations, event ticketing, flowers and gifts and comparison
shopping.
Excite@Home is focused on these key areas to bring the mobile user the online
tools that are most relevant to their 'on-the-road' lifestyles. The
applications also mark a continuation of Excite@Home's recent moves into the
wireless market.
