Java Blend—designed to simplify database application development and
integrate Java objects with enterprise data. Java Blend also assists you in
writing entirely with Java objects, and because it maps database records
transparently and automatically to Java objects and Java objects to
databases, you can avoid translating programming language data structures to
database tables. Java Blend also offers capability for increased performance
by leveraging sophisticated caching algorithms and query processing to

Java Media and Communications APIs announced—providing enhanced multimedia
and communications capabilities ranging from streaming audio and video to
telephony and speech.
— Java 3DTM API 1.0 specification
A simple programming model for building, rendering, and controlling the
behavior of 3D objects and visual environments. Java 3D is designed to enable
you to easily incorporate high-quality, scalable, and platform-independent 3D
graphics into Java-based and applications and applets.
— Java 2D API
Extends the capabilities of the abstract windowing toolkit (AWT) and provides
device and resolution independent graphics and enhanced text-handling
capabilities for the Java Virtual Machine. Java 2D is part of the Java
Foundation Classes (JFC), and its features are designed to enable you to
create and manipulate shapes and also utilize font support to develop
graphically enriched user interfaces, multilingual applications, and web
pages.
— Java Media Player API
Receives, controls, and plays time-synchronized media, such as audio and
video, in a variety of formats. Java Media Player is designed to enable you
to embed media in Java applications and applets and play data from local or
network sources. This release is the first phase of a three-phase release of
Java Media Framework, which is a set of interfaces designed to play, capture,
and conference media.
— Java Sound Engine
A high-quality audio rendering and sound synthesis engine designed to offer
reliable, consistent, stereo-quality sound for Java-enabled
platforms--without requiring a high end sound card. Java Sound Engine is
planned to be an essential component of the next release of the JDKTM, and
plans call for the engine to integrate fully into the Java Virtual Machine.
— Java Sound API
Enables sound designers to integrate their work into Java applications and
onto the Internet. Java Sound API will enable developers in fields such as
education, advertising, and telecommunications to take advantage of
high-quality web audio capabilities.

Java Media Framework 1.0 released. The Java Media Framework is part of the
Java Media and Communication family of APIs. You can also join a discussion

Javaserver Toolkit—designed to simplify the task of developing
network-centric servers in Java and reduce time to market. JavaServer Toolkit
is one of three Java server products announced in June and July, 1997. The
products provide a framework for creating network-centric server solutions
such as web servers, proxy servers, print servers, and boot servers. The
other two announced server products are Java Web Server 1.0 and Java Servlet
Development Kit. Details on the fourth server product, the Java NC Server,
