Early Access Developer Release Software. The following JavaTM platform
software is now available for download on the JDC: JavaTM Development
Kit 1.2 Release Candidate 1, POP3 Provider Beta Release for JavaMail,
JavaTM Wallet Release 1.0 EA 2b, Java 3DTM 1.1 Beta 2 API, Java
Cryptography Extension 1.2 Beta 2, JavaTM Foundation Classes (JFC) Swing

SunTM Aquires NetDynamicsTM. NetDynamics technology provides the
architectural foundation for the next wave in enterprise network computing
-- application servers based on the JavaTM technology platform. The
NetDynamics application server platform is a technology and business
solution that complements the Java Web ServerTM, JavaTM Embedded Server
products, and other enterprise Java technology products. With NetDynamics
technology, Sun delivers a middle-tier application layer that ties together
disparate operating systems, databases, business applications, embedded
devices, desktop computers, and mainframes. The product line assists
organizations in more effectively connecting their customers, partners,
suppliers, and employees to gain competitive advantage in the

JavaTM Embedded Server 1.0 Released. A small footprint network server
that enables the real-time deployment and installation of applications to
remote embedded devices. The Java Embedded Server is a new addition to the
Sun MicrosystemsTM line of application servers, and provides the
foundation for embedded intelligent systems in both industrial
infrastructure and consumer products.
The Java Embedded Server resides on networked devices and allows dynamic,
secure life-cycle control of device capabilities and the deployment of
applications. This life-cycle control functionality is designed to enable
services to be delivered, upgraded, installed, and managed on a
just-in-time basis, and is intended to eliminate the need to focus on these
issues and allow rapid application development and deployment. The product

JavaTM Speech API 1.0 Specification Released. Allows developers to
incorporate speech recognition and/or speech synthesis into applets and
applications. The API specifies a single interface for developing and
deploying speech technology applications on the desktop, in small portable
devices, and in telephony servers. The Java Speech API can also be used
with the PersonalJavaTM and EmbeddedJavaTM platforms to enable speech
application development for portable and small computing devices. Also
released is the Java Speech Grammar Format 1.0 Specification, which
provides a standard text format for defining grammars for cross-platform,
cross-vendor control of speech recognizers. For information, see:

JavaTM Media Framework 1.0.2 Announced. The Java Media Framework (JMF)
API allows developers to incorporate audio and video into Java applications
and applets. This maintenance release includes: compatibility with
JDKTM 1.2 Beta 4, the latest version of JavaTM Sound engine, the
ability to run in JDK 1.1-supported browsers, improved QuickTime parsing,
and audio, MPEG, and custom DataSource bug fixes. To access, see:

JavaTM Servlet API Specification Available. A Java Standard Extension
providing web application developers a simple consistent mechanism for
extending the functionality of a web server. Version 2.1 of the
specification is now available for public comment. To access, see:

JDBCTM 2.0 Standard Extension API Realeased. A standard SQL database
access interface, developed by Sun and its Java technology partners. This
API provides Java language programmers with a uniform interface for a wide
range of relational databases, and provides a common base on which higher
level tools and interfaces can be built. JDBC is now a standard part of
the Java platform and is included in the JDK. To access, see:

HotJavaTM Browser 1.1.5 Released. A highly customizable modular solution
for creating and deploying web-enabled applications across diverse
environments and devices. HotJava Browser's small footprint makes it a
scalable solution for a variety of devices -- from NCs and PDAs to desktop
PCs, kiosks, screen phones, and consumer devices. The newest version of
HotJava Browser uses the JavaBeansTM component model, designed so that
developers can bring Internet and Intranet products to market quickly and
cost effectively. Includes SPARCTM, Windows NT, and Windows 95 versions,

JavaServerTM PagesTM Specification Available. The Version 0.92
specification and reference implementation are now available for public
review and comment. JavaServer Pages provides an easy way to access
server-side components from web pages -- and to separate the presentation
of dynamic content from the generation of the content. There is no need to
know the JavaTM programming language to use the software. To access,
