Wow! tkno, Dana, and Mark all had really good answers! Check all of those because they are all very accurate assessments from your description. One last thing came to my mind, your files could be getting corrupted during transfer. With FrontPage, it's unlikely because it handles the transfers for you, automatically choosing binary or raw. But I've seen users select the wrong transfer type with an FTP program and trash files in the process of transferring them. Just a vague possibility.

For a little extra info about graphic file types, you might want to look at the reply I wrote to John at the beginning of this thread. Though by no means comprehensive, it should help you with choosing the proper file type for a given graphic.

I think that there may be a series about the basics of web graphics here on DevShed soon. (Then again, there also may not! *grin*)
