Zend Interview
An interview with the developers of Zend. Zend is a scripting engine developed by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans (hence the name Zend). Both are members of the core development team of PHP, and wrote large portions of PHP 3.0, including the language implementation and some of the popular modules like the MySQL, Sybase and PostgreSQL modules.

No one is saying that you shouldn't use Perl.. PHP3 can do pretty much anything you need done and it can do it fast. A person with limited coding experience could pick up the PHP3 manual, a tutorial on SQL and have a *strong* start on a fairly large "E-commerce site" in a matter of days.
I don't think you can say Perl is easy to learn or very quick..
All that said, no one is saying PHP is "better" than Perl, I would say that as far as a web-based scritping language goes, PHP beats Perl hands down but that is only my opinion. Try it out! You could easily get started in a day if you're already a perl coder.
