Welcome to the UC Berkeley Plateau Multimedia Project archive site. This directory contains the following directories and files: README - this file. Tcl-DP - a distributed programming extension to Tcl/Tk. articles - recent articles from newspapers about multimedia events. misc - miscellaneous programs - use at your own risk. mpeg - mpeg video encoder and decoder and movies. papers - various multimedia papers. winnt - Windows NT software More details on these directories and files are included below. This file was last updated on 27 May 1993. For further information about the project see the description in the file papers/research.txt. -- papers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The papers directory contains the following papers: o bsmith-thesis.ps.gz is Brian Smith's Ph.D. dissertation on continuous media systems. Brian is now an assistant professor at Cornell University (bsmith@cs.cornell.edu) o Global-Effects.ps.Z describes a set of algorithms for manipulating motion JPEG compressed video data at near real time rates. It will appear in the ACM MM 94 conference. o CMPlayer.ps.Z describes the architecture of the Plateau CM Player. It appeared at the "3rd Intl Workshop on Network and OS Support for Digital Audio and Video", San Diego, CA, Nov 92. o Mpeg93.ps.Z is a paper describing our experience building the mpeg decoder. It appeared at the "ACM Multimedia 93," Anaheim, CA, Aug 93. o MM93Talk.ps.Z is a copy of the slides used for the talk at the ACM Multimedia 93 conference for the previous paper. The performance numbers comparing the mpeg player on different platforms were updated the week before the conference so they reflect the most recent results. o compressed.ps.Z is a paper describing a set of fast special effects transforms that can be performed directly on compressed jpeg images. It appeared in "IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications," Sep 1993. o ic-course.ps.Z -- is a paper that describes a hypermedia course titled "Introduction to Semiconductor Manufacturing and Markets." This course was developed with the Hypermedia-in-Picasso system to learn about hypermedia courseware. Of particular interest are the video nodes created from course lectures at U.C. Berkeley. o ic-study.ps.Z -- describes a human factors experiment to study learning and navigation in a hypermedia course. The course used was the Semiconductor Manufacturing Introduction mentioned in the previous paper. To appear in "Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia." o Mpeg94.txt -- is an abstract submitted to SPIE '94 that describes the integration of the mpeg video decoder into the CMPlayer. o VODdb94.txt -- is an abstract submitted to SPIE '94 that describes the design of a metadata DB that holds information about movies, lectures, and other video material stored in a video-on-demand server. o VODarch94.txt -- is an abstract submitted to SPIE '94 that describes the architecture of the UCB video-on-demand system including video file servers and tertiary store archive servers. o VodsProp93.ps.Z -- is a proposal to build a Video-on-Demand server. The primary focus of the research is to build a metadata database and archive server that will provide data for many video file servers. The user should be able to access data transparently. o mpeg-encode.ps.Z -- describes the Berkeley MPEG-1 video encoder including performance studies on both the sequential and parallel encoder. -- mpeg --------------------------------------------------------------------- The mpeg directory contains MPEG related materials. Virtually all files are 8 bit encoded, so be sure to set binary transfer mode when you ftp any of these files. o mpeg/vmpeg10.zip is a DOS mpeg player by Stefan Eckart o mpeg_play-???.tar.Z is the latest version of the Berkeley MPEG player o v???.patch.tar.Z is the patch file from the previous release of the MPEG player o MPEG.faq is the frequently asked questions list for MPEG (thanks to Frank Gadegast, phade@cs.tu-berlin.de) o movies/ is a subdirectory containing a variety of mpeg movies. Most of these are I-frame only sequences produced using the XING encoder. Some are quite large (esp genoa.mpg), so be sure you have enough space before you grab them. See the README file in this directory for mpeg movies with interframes (i.e., P and B). o Ports/ contains ports of the mpeg decoder to other platforms including Macintosh and PC's. o mpeg_encode-???.tar.Z is the latest version of the Berkeley MPEG encoder. o mpeg/mpegstat.tar.Z -- a tool for gathering statistics about mpeg streams, courtesy Tom Pfeifer (pfeifer@fokus.gmd.de). -- Tcl-DP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tcl Distributed Programming (Tcl-DP) is a freely distributed extension to Tcl/Tk which adds TCP and IP connection management, remote procedure call (RPC), remote execution (RDO), and a very simple distributed object protocol to Tcl/Tk. -- misc ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The misc directory contains miscellaneous files that may be useful to MM system developers. o jgetFrame.tar.Z is the source code for a program to extract a single frame from a parallax movie file as a JFIF file. o MazeMan_1.0.tar.Z is a maze game written in Tcl/Tk. Something to play with while you wait for the mpeg encoder to finish. o mtv.tar.Z is the source code for a program to convert a parallax Jmovie file into a file that can be loaded into the CM Player. o parsejpeg.tar.Z is the source code for a high performance program to perform entropy (huffman) encoding and decoding of jpeg files. o parser.tar.Z is a low performance version of parsejpeg.tar.Z o tknx0.3.tar.Z is the source code for a port of tk 6.7 that doesn't establish a connection to the X server. Useful for folks writing daemons on tcl-dp. -- winnt ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The winnt directory contains software for Windows NT. o tknt36r2.tar.gz is the source code for an NT port of the twin package. |
