Lethal Virus decimates Registry!

A couple of days ago I turned on my "good" computer, only to find that it launched a window that looked like a DOS ScanDisk. It was actually a Registry checker, telling me my Registry was corrupt and that it could fix it. I said okay.

After the reboot, Windows did load, but it said there was a problem with some system files and the Registry, and said it could fix them. I said okay . . . and I was back at step one.

At this time I decided to format my hard drive and start over. Over the next few hours I tried four different Windows CDs and even a Red Hat Linux CD, just to see if Windows was the problem. However, every time Windows got to to the hardware detection part of the setup, it said that some of the CAB files couldn't be read. It even said this when I tried another CD-ROM and copied it to my hard drive.

After playing with that, I decided to call it a day, thinking the hard drive was dead. Three days later, I found another hard drive and plugged it in. That didn't work, so I found a DOS virus checker on the Internet and tried to run it. It found two viruses in memory, but it could not get rid of them because it was only a virus CHECKER.

After about two hours of searching I finally found a virus eradicator that works in DOS. However, it didn't work because it said it was too old. After searching for a file that gave it a date to stop working, I decided to try and change the date to a random day in 1995. This worked; however, the virus scanner I found didn't know either of the viruses I had.

I am hesitant to buy more memory because I fear the problem may also be elsewhere. If anyone knows how to fix this problem, please respond!
