SYSTEM UPGRADER - Q&A

Date posted: 2/22/98

QUESTION

Here's my system:

Intel 486 33 MHz Tower
two 350 MB hard drives
16 MB RAM
CD-ROM drive
SoundBlaster 16
28.8 Kbps modem
20 inch monitor
ATI Mach 32 video card
Windows 95

Can anyone tell me the best CPU to buy to speed my computer up? At 33 MHz, it can only run some games and software.

ANSWER

You are limited to 486s or some Pentium overdrive chips if you keep the motherboard you have now. I'd toss it out the window and go with a 233 MHz K6 or Pentium with MMX on a new motherboard. Expect it to cost around $300 total. If you only want to upgrade your processor, you still won't be able to play many games well, but it will only cost you $100-$200. I'd go with the AMD 486/133 chip.
