SYSTEM UPGRADER - Q&A

QUESTION

Here's my system:

AMD K5 100 MHz Tower
5.2 GB hard drive
16 MB RAM
CD-ROM drive
14 inch monitor
33.6 Kbps modem
16-bit ISA soundcard
Cirrus video card with 1 MB
Windows 95

I'm unable to load DOS from my old 1.6 GB hard drive. I had an old 1.6 GB that I exchanged for a 5.2. When we placed the 1.6 in a 486 machine, the owner mixed up the way the floppy interface cable supposed to go in. Now I cannot partition the drive using fdisk. I can create the first partition but then I get no more room. I get the DOS loaded; it is there on the disk non-scrambled, but it does not load.

I NEED HELP!!

ANSWER

Hey, you sound familiar. I don’t think the cable mix-up is causing the problem. It sounds like your friend’s 486 doesn’t support enhanced IDE. Is it claiming the drive is just 540 MB? Maybe your friend should think about a new motherboard, unless he wants to monkey around with software LBA drivers.
