What's next for PC memory?

Makers of Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) have announced a 700 MHz version of the memory.

It was reported last month that RDRAM manufacturers would not be able to manufacture in volume the 800 MHz version that Intel had initially announced on its roadmaps for use in September '99. The response was that a 600 MHz version could be manufactured in time in the proper volumes. Now, memory makers are saying that a 700 MHz version of the memory should be available in volume. What effect this will have on Intel's roadmap for memory is not known.

The data throughput for 600, 700 and 800 MHz RDRAM is 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 GBytes/second, respectively. Higher data transmission rates are necessary to avoid memory bottlenecks as processor speeds increase.

On the flipside, makers of traditional SDRAM have been banking on DDR SDRAM to bring the technology up to 133 MHz, for data transfer rates of 1 GBytes/sec. The current standard of 100 MHz SDRAM transfers data at 800 MBytes/sec (.8 GBytes/sec).

An industry standards group is looking to pump up the transmission rate of SDRAM using a new technology standard called DDR-2. The standard should allow for transmission speeds of between 3.2-4.8 GBytes/sec. It is possible that this translates to 400-600 MHz SDRAM memory speeds. DDR-2 SDRAM should be available in 2001.

Currently, SDRAM transfers 64 bits per clock cycle and RDRAM transfers 16 bits, so RDRAM will have to keep a speed advantage of at least 4x to keep its performance, or use multiple buses or a broader bus.

ROB'S OPINION
What the heck is Intel going to do with 700 MHz RDRAM? 700 doesn't go nicely with any multipliers besides 7 * 100, so Intel may still be looking at a 100 MHz bus even if it decides to ship with it.

It looks like memory manufacturers will have to move to .18 micron processes to kick out 800 MHz RDRAM in volume. Samsung is there, now the others have to catch up.
