AMD's Athlon to cook at 650 MHz
posted 8/9/99

NEWS
AMD will be releasing its Athlon chip to the public in four speed flavors next week, including a 650 MHz version. Previously, AMD was expected to release its Athlon (K7) processor in only 500, 550, and 600 MHz versions.

The release of a 650 MHz processor will put AMD out in front of Intel, which tops out at 600 MHz and has no definite plans to release processors faster than 600 MHz until November.

ROB'S OPINION
Ah, the beauty of competition! Intel will probably up its roadmap and release a 650 MHz Pentium III sooner, no matter what it takes.

What's with the lack of a 600 MHz Xeon anyway? Servers need faster processors! When the server dual-processing-capable Athlons come out in 2000, Intel will have to keep its Xeons up to date.

Until then, it's a consumer chip speed war.
