Over the weekend, Intel cut prices of its Pentium III processors as follows:

In August, Intel is expected to release a Pentium III 600 MHz priced less than it originally planned. Other Intel price drops are expected as well in August, as AMD makes its Athlon processor widely available.

ROB'S OPINION
This is all expected, and all good for the consumer. Hopefully Intel and AMD will keep the price war going.

People keep asking me about the availability of the Athlon processor. The deal is that AMD pre-announced it when it was shipping to OEMs, but the actual release date to consumers is expected to be in the first or second week of August.

Intel's Pentium III 600 MHz will be priced less than AMD's Athlon 600 MHz at introduction. I'd recommend that AMD keep the prices high and make some money for a change instead of taking losses. The Athlon is a good piece of electronics, no doubt about it.
