AMD introduces the Athlon, admits loss posted 6/24/99 NEWS AMD confirmed that it is shipping processors to OEMs now, and systems using the K7 processor will be shipping sometime in the third quarter of 1999. Q3 starts in July, of course, but a more likely date may be August. IBM, Dell, and Gateway are all said to be working on systems with the K7 processor. Besides the Athlon success, AMD had to admit to its shareholders that it suffered a US$200 million loss over the second quarter of 1999. The reason for the loss was a low Average Selling Price (ASP) per chip sold, and smaller shipments of the K6 series of processors.
ROB'S OPINION Suspiciously missing from the press release and FAQ are any word about the memory architecture that will be used to power the K7. It's possible that it will be plain old PC100 SDRAM. Maybe there will be some interleaving magic of reading/writing to two DIMMs at once to achieve the 200 MHz system bus speed. It's really 100*2, you know. We'll just have to wait and see. I bet that the K7 will be a good candidate for overclockers, especially if sys.com can advertise an 800 MHz system using a Kryotech cooling solution.
