Intel's Coppermine Delayed
posted 6/18/99

NEWS
Intel is having difficulties moving its Pentium III chip from its current .25 micron process to a .18 micron process. The result of these problems is that Intel's .18 micron Pentium III chip, code-named Coppermine, will be delayed from September '99 to November '99.

Intel will be releasing a 600 MHz Pentium III on schedule in September, but it will not have 256 KB of integrated L2 cache. Also, the first generation of mobile processors featuring Geyserville technology will initially run at 500 MHz instead of 600 MHz, with an "unplugged" speed of 400 MHz.

ROB'S OPINION
It would seem that AMD has a distinct advantage here. However, it is all up to just how many K7s AMD can produce.

It is certainly surprising to me that Intel has problems moving to .18 microns. Intel goes around demoing 1 GHz Coppermine processors and then gets hit with a nasty delay like this. Are the tables turning? Is AMD going to have some good luck now?

I hear AMD plans to own 20% of the desktop market and 25% of the mobile market by the end of the year. Good luck to Intel. It'll need it.
