S3 announces mobile Savage
posted 6/8/99

NEWS
S3 announced that its Savage/MX and Savage/IX 3D video chipsets will be available by the end of June, and arriving in laptops in September. The Savage/IX will come integrated with 4, 8, and 16 MB of memory, while the Savage/MX ships by itself, leaving the laptop builders to add their own video memory.

The chip is built on a .18 micron process and features 32-bit operation, S3's famous texture compression, and is an AGP 2X part. It runs on 1.8 volts and dissipates 1.5 watts at maximum operation.

ROB'S OPINION
If you follow the link, you will see a competitive analysis that compares the Savage mobile chips quite favorably to ATI's Rage Pro LT chip, the current 3D graphics king in laptops. Unfortunately, the comparison was done with Winbench 3D, and they don't provide much information (besides the fact that the test was run on a Pentium III 450 MHz processor).

Wait . . . a Pentium III 450 MHz "mobile" processor? Those aren't even available yet. It's not even due out until September. Is that why S3 is coming out way ahead? What processors were the other chips running with? S3 has favored status with Intel because of all the special little deals they've been doing together.

Will the Savage really beat the ATI Rage LT Pro? We'll have to wait until September to find out.
