NEWS
Intel is working on a .18 micron process system-on-a-chip code-named Timna. The chip will feature a Pentium II processor with 128 KB of L2 cache on-chip, built-in video, and an RDRAM memory controller.

Intel is looking to release this chip sometime in the year 2000.

ROB'S OPINION
The big question here is: why? Why does Intel want to bother getting into the high-risk, low-gain market of integrated processors? So far, National Semi has been very unsuccessful at releasing any new integrated processors. Is Intel trying to head it off at the pass? With Intel's clout, it might as well wait for National Semi to come out with its version first and then do it one better.

Once again, Intel is pushing towards Rambus as the memory architecture, but this time it is on a low-end PC. Now that Rambus memory won't be available in quantity until Q4 '99, I don't see Timna making any kind of splash until at least Q4 2000.
