@HISC Web Site Promotion Workshop - Zipf's law

Defined

An empirical rule that the number of occurrences of a given word in a long stretch of text is the reciprocal of the order of frequency of occurrence.

e.g. the tenth most frequent word occurs approximately 10/100 as many times as the most frequent word

Closer

Zipf's law in its simplest form cannot be correct. However we can use this to look closely at subsets of words to find triangulation between keywords and site description.

Zipf's law in its simplest form provides an approximate description of an aspect of human behavior in generating language.

George Kingsley Zipf, arrived at this conclusion empirically by examining the statistics of actual text.

Web Site Promotion/Knowledge Management

We can use Zipf's law in its simplest form to decide if a page content (e.g. a small subset of the body text in HTML, say 5000 characters) is related to the keywords and description that the author generated.
