What is the HotBot Directory?
The HotBot Directory is a manually compiled Web site directory, indexed by subject. It is
organized according to general, top-level categories moving to more specific narrow ones. Editors
review and maintain sites in the Directory within their subject areas of expertise. Directory editors
are also responsible for creating subcategories and reorganizing site listings. You can submit an
application to become a Directory editor within the category or categories of your choice (see below).
What are the HotBot Directory Features?
| |
(###) refers to the number of links under that particular category.
(*) refers to cross-references to other categories within the HotBot Directory.
Related categories are links to similar categories within the HotBot Directory to help you broaden
or narrow your search for specific topics (categories).
Newsgroups are links to relevant newsgroups related to that category.
Site recommendations are sites that have been reviewed and specifically chosen by the category
editors as exceptional and useful sites for users. If you would like to recommend a site to be
placed under the Site Recommendations list, please suggest a new subcategory in the site
submission form. (Note: if there is a red NEW flag next to a site recommendation, it means that
the site has just been added to the HotBot Directory by the editors in that category.)
Category editors are links to each of the editors who maintain sites under that particular category.
If you click on an editor, you will see links to email feedback to that editor, along with links to
other HotBot Directory categories that the editor also maintains.
Submit a Site is a link that allows you to submit a site for review by a Directory editor at HotBot.
Once reviewed, the site will be added to the appropriate HotBot Directory category. Click on this
link and enter the URL and description of the site you're submitting. (Note: If you do not see this
link at the bottom of a category, it is probably because the category is too general. You must
search more deeply within the category in order to submit your site. The Submit a Site link should
be located on the bottom of the page.)
Become an Editor is a link that allows you to submit an application and become an editor for a
particular category.
Try a search for ... on ... are links that help you fine-tune your Web search. You can take
advantage of this feature only if you've searched far enough to find yourself on an Open Directory
page. If you do a search for "museums," for example, and submit your query, you will see a list
of Directory results. You would then click the Reference/Museums link at the top of the page.
Finally, you'd go to the bottom of the page where the Reference/Musuems link takes you. Here
you'd find links to HotBot, Lycos and more. You could then continue your search,
without reintroducing your search terms, via these engines.

What is the Open Directory Project?
The Open Directory Project is a link to the larger Directory from which the HotBot Directory derives its
listings. Open Directory is the largest human-edited Internet directory in the world.
Many Web search portals, including HotBot and Lycos, take part in this project.
Why can't I see the Submit a Site link in a category?
You are probably searching within a top-level category. If the top-level category is too broad, you
will not see the Submit a Site link at the bottom of the page. Therefore, you must search further
within the specific category by clicking on one of the subcategory links. The Submit a Site link will
appear near the bottom of the subcategory page. For more information, please go to
these instructions.
How do I become an editor?
At the bottom of each category, there are links that allow you to submit an application to become
a Directory editor for that particular category. If you don't see this link near the bottom of the
page, then you must search further into the category by clicking on one of the listed subcategories.
Who do I contact about controversial material in a category listing?
If you encounter any material on a site that troubles you, HotBot encourages you to contact one
of the editors from that category. Directory editors are responsible for investigating any
questionable site listings.
How do I suggest a new subcategory in the HotBot Directory?
Submit a Site link or Become an Editor link serve up forms that allow you to recommend new sites
or new subcategories in the Directory.
How often does the HotBot Directory get updated?
The HotBot Directory is updated with new content approximately every three weeks.
Is there a top-level Shopping category in the HotBot Directory?
Our own Shopping section is not yet a part of the HotBot Directory. In the meantime, please
go to Open Directory: Shopping to view the shopping category sites.
Are there links to the HotBot Directory from other places in HotBot?
Yes! Every time you search on HotBot's Web Search, you will automatically return HotBot Directory
matches related to your search query. The HotBot Directory matches are listed above the Web
results on the results page.
