THE 2000 JAVAONESM CONFERENCE: A BLOW-OUT

June 14, 2000 -- The fifth anniversary of the Java^TM platform was celebrated at the 2000 JavaOne^SM developers conference, which drew an estimated 25,000 attendees, solidifying the JavaOne conference's title as the world's largest developer conference. The curriculum included hundreds of technical sessions and Birds-Of-Feather (BOFs) gatherings given by experts from around the globe. A pre-conference Java University^SM program provided cutting-edge training.

If there was one common theme during the four-day extravaganza, it was certainly that the technology has arrived. Big names such as American Express, Ford, BMW, Motorola, Nokia, Sega, Research In Motion, and many others demonstrated both award-winning products and exciting future prototypes of their Java^TM platform and Jini^TM technology implementations.

The conference featured keynotes by Sun luminaries including Scott McNealy and Patricia Sueltz, who invited guests on-stage including NBA superstar Magic Johnson (for American Express Blue Card) and Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Java technology creator James Gosling and Sun's visionary-in-residence Bill Joy took the stage to share their thoughts on the future of the industry for the Day 2 keynote. The keynote on Day 3 featured Motorola CEO Chris Galvin and O'Reilly & Associates founder Tim O'Reilly, who addressed the importance of standards and community to the creation and adoption of new technology. Sun's chief scientist John Gage served as master of ceremonies for all the keynotes and batted clean-up on Day 4, giving a talk that showcased technologies for people with disabilities built on the Java platform.

The JavaOne event was also host to a conference Pavilion, where hundreds of companies working with the Java platform showcased their wares. A bookstore provided one-stop shopping for key titles on Java technology and the Java Store^SM marketplace stocked a full line of wearables emblazoned with the insignia of Java technology.

Java technology was everywhere. It was even in MySchedule, an implementation of JavaServer Pages^TM (JSP^TM) technology that let attendees map out their schedule for the week, which was developed by java.sun.com team engineers.

Sun made numerous announcements at the conference including major initiatives with the Java Community Process^SM, Java^TM Web Start software, and Forte ^TM for Java^TM, Community Edition. Sun also updated the industry on initiatives including XML, JavaServer Pages technology, the Enterprise JavaBeans^TM architecture, Compatible branding, and others.

The JavaOne conference served as the epicenter for the Java technology community during its four-day run. It drew luminaries and visionaries from around the world. As the mascot for the Java platform, Duke, blows out the candles on his fifth birthday preparation is already under way for the 2001 JavaOne developer conference, scheduled for June 3-8, 2001.
