Advanced: integrate with your site

The most sophisticated version of the Get JavaTM Now download program uses your own web pages and applets to trigger the download, confirm the installation, and provide download and installation assistance. This version requires more effort on your part, but that effort is rewarded by keeping your visitors right where you want them: on your site.

To take advantage of our advanced download program:

  1. Register your use of the download system to help us ensure that it is being used correctly by writing to getjava-register@sun.com.

  2. Download the following script file from our site:

    http://java.sun.com/getjava/autodownload.vbs

This VBScript file detects visitors' operating system and browser versions and redirects them to one page on your site (the "pass" URL) if their system is running Microsoft Windows XP, Me, NT, 2000, 98, or 95 and their browser is Internet Explorer (4.0 or later), and to another page on your site (the "fail" URL) if they are running any other OS or browser.

  3. Construct the file that will serve as your "pass" URL, which will trigger the automatic download if the visitor has the right combination of OS, browser, and an older or missing Java Plug-in. This file must contain an <OBJECT> tag that will initiate download of Java Plug-in. See the source code of our sample "pass" URL file.

  4. Construct the file that will serve as your "fail" URL, which should inform your visitors how to manually download Java Plug-in because automatic download and installation is not available for their combination of operating system and browser. Feel free to borrow from our other platforms page.

  5. Change the jpi_pass and jpi_fail variables in your local copy of autodownload.vbs so that they point to your "pass" and "fail" URLs. The URLs must be absolute, not relative:

  6. Finally, for each page on your site that contains an <APPLET> tag (and for which you want the automatic download feature enabled), insert the following in the HEAD of the page:

    and save the page.

  7. With the script installed, visitors to your page will follow one of three paths:

If the visitor already has the latest version of the plug-in, your applet will be available immediately.

Otherwise, if the visitor is using Microsoft Windows XP, Me, NT, 2000, 98, or 95 and Internet Explorer 4 (or later), the script above will open your "pass" URL a pop-up window, which will trigger the automatic download and installation process. When the visitor completes the installation and closes the window, your applet will be available.

If the visitor has any other operating system or browser, the script will redirect them to your "fail" URL for manual download and installation instructions.
  8. To support as many visitors as possible, and to encourage your visitors to run the latest Java Plug-in, you may want to add a Get Java Now button to your page as well.

  9. Thank you for choosing to promote the Java platform.
