I'm moving to a new apartment a few blocks
away. If I haven't given you my new address yet, and you think you
should have it, send me e-mail. I'm keeping the
same phone number.
I'm also getting a DSL line, which hopefully
should be up and running by August 10th or so. However, the second
phone line is going away immediately. I'm temporarily relocating my
server to a friend's place, so I can keep it online as much as
possible, but that means I'll be without reliable Internet access
until the DSL line is up and running. I'll try to check my e-mail
at least daily, though. For more current updates check
webwizardry.net.
Last year I made a few
predictions about the next Star Wars
movie. It looks like I was right about a few things, but unclear
on a few other details. Here's some updated speculation.
Naboo and Alderon enter into an alliance, and
Queen Amidala marries the leader of Alderon to signify their partnership,
although the two are not really in love. Anakin is being trained by
Obi-Wan Kenobe, and is learning faster than expected. Amidala and Anakin
fall in love. After the embarassing failure of the battle droids at the
end of Episode I, the Trade Federation begins building an army of human
clones. Naboo, Alderon, Tatooine and other worlds are attacked, and
form an alliance to wage war against the Federation.
Anakin makes love to Amidala the night before he and
Obi-Wan must leave to fight in the war. Anakin does very well in battle,
and gets a big head. Obi-Wan doesn't trust this, and the two become
annoyed with each other. Senator Palpatine is campaining in the Senate,
trying to put an end to the Trade Federation, but the Senate is so
bogged down in beurocracy that nothing can get done. He calls for the
Senate to be disbanded and a new form of government to be established.
He is successful, and is appointed Emperor because of his demonstrated
leadership abilities and strong character.
Shmi Skywalker is captured. Anakin wants to go
try and save her, but Obi-Wan, smelling a trap, refuses to let him go.
In one final battle the Federation is defeated, but Shmi is killed.
Anakin blames Obi-Wan for the death of his mother, and leaves in a fit
of rage. Palpatine appears to Anakin privately and urges him to part
company with Obi-Wan, offering to complete Anakin's training himself.
Anakin, grieving for his mother and furious at Obi-Wan, turns to the
Dark Side. Obi-Wan warns Amidala that Anakin has turned. She gives birth
to twins, and secretly sends them to Alderon for safety just as Anakin
returns home.
This is mostly speculation, and I'm sure many of the
details that I have correct are listed here out of order. We'll find out
next year. ;-)
After several hours of work, all themes now
work without requiring JavaScript! JavaScript is still used if your
browser supports it, but if it's turned off or you're not using a
JavaScript-capable browser, you no longer get redirected back to
the Simple theme.
Once that was taken care of, I set Konqueror
(KDE's built-in Web browser) to default to the Plain theme. I need
to start testing with other non-standard browsers to see which of
them can handle which themes. If you've got something weird, tell
me what it looks like!
As you can see, I'm working on a new site.
Many of the design decisions were based on my desire to stretch my
abilities with Web design, rather than keeping things simple. I've
been focusing primarily on the technical aspects of the site, while
basically ignoring the content, so there are still a few inaccuracies
on the About Me page, and not really any new content.
I'll work on it when I have time.
One of the crazier things I've introduced with the
new site is the ability to change the theme of the site - all the
graphics, colors, etc. Most of the themes are designed with boxes that
look like windows on a computer desktop from a variety of different
operating systems; I plan to build a few custom themes that are simply
neat-looking as well. You can choose themes from the Themes box at the
right of any page on the site other than this one (or if you're using
the Simple theme, links to the different themes are at the very
bottom of the page).
The Simple theme is designed for older browsers such
as Netscape 2.x, text-only browsers such as Lynx, and anything else that
doesn't support JavaScript (I might modify the other themes so they don't
require JavaScript, but for now, they all do). The Plain theme is
designed for Netscape 3.x (and equivalent versions of Internet Explorer).
All other themes require at least a 4.0 browser, and have been tested with
Netscape 4.x, Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x and Mozilla M15 on Windows,
Mac OS and Linux. Not all the graphics on all the themes are complete,
so if something looks wrong, I probably know about it already.
When will I be done? Probably never; the
evolution of this site has been an ongoing project for about four
years now, and I enjoy working on it. When will I at least be mostly
done, so at least there aren't any obvious broken pieces? I'm not sure,
but probably sometime this summer, depending on what comes up and how
bored I get. When will I update the content? I don't know, but I'll try
to get to it soon.
Browse around! If something doesn't work, come back
later, and if it's still broken, e-mail me. If you have a browser you
don't think I've tested yet and something doesn't look the way you'd
expect, send me a screen shot and I'll see what I can do. If you're
itching to make some new themes, feel free to submit them, but don't
expect me to use them (you'll have a better chance if your theme looks
very different from all the other themes and if you can send me sample
HTML code in addition to just graphics). If you want to see the source
code to the CGI and SHTML files I'm using, ask, and I'll probably send you
an excerpt or something, but the code is pretty highly specialized just
for this site, so you probably wouldn't find it particularly useful (and
besides, parts of the code are pretty lame anyway).
Anyway, enjoy!
