THE UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE SOLARIS OPERATING
ENVIRONMENT
>>> local ftp mirrors
We provide mirrors for software that we believe benefits the unix
community. Either we have seeked out and contacted the authors, or they
have contacted us. If you have some software that you'd like us to
mirror, let us know. Send an email to webmaster@solarisguide.com
Zebra
ftp://ftp.zebra.org
GNU Zebra is free software (distributed under GNU Generic Public License)
that manages TCP/IP based routing protocols. It supports BGP-4 protocol
as described in RFC1771 (A Border Gateway Protocol 4) as well as RIPv1,
RIPv2 and OSPFv2. Unlike traditional, Gated based, monolithic
architectures and even the so-called
Redhat Linux
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/redhat
Granted, Redhat is an entirely different operating system than
Solaris, but having the full distribution available can be useful when
trying to run applications under LXRun.

GNU Software

The GNU Project maintains many open source applications.

Masqdialer
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/masqdialer
The Masqdialer server sits on a unix box and will initiate network
connections at the requests of clients. The server will either accept
or deny the request based on IP address and username and
password authentication. The Masqdialer server originally would
only dial out modems using pppd, but now it has a wide array of
uses, and essentially any network connection can be used.

tin
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/tin
tin is a threaded NNTP and spool based UseNet newsreader
for a variety of platforms.
tin website: http://www.tin.org
Apache
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/apache
Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet
since April of 1996. The January 1999 WWW server site survey by
Netcraft found that over 53% of the web sites on the Internet are
using Apache (58% if Apache derivatives are included), thus
making it more widely used than all other web servers combined.

Bind
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/isc/bind
BIND is an implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS)
protocols providing an openly redistributable reference
implementation of the major components of the Domain Name
System, including a Domain Name System server (named), a Domain Name System resolver library and tools for verifying the proper operation of the DNS server.

DHCP
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/isc/dhcp
The ISC Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Distribution provides
a freely redistributable reference implementation of all aspects of the
DHCP protocol, through a suite of DHCP tools including a DHCP server, a DHCP client, and a DHCP relay agent.

INN
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/isc/inn
InterNetNews is a complete Usenet system. The cornerstone of the package is innd, an NNTP server that multiplexes all I/O.
Think of it as an nntpd merged with the B News inews, or as a C News relaynews that reads multiple NNTP streams.
Newsreading is handled by a separate server, nnrpd, that is spawned for each client. Both innd and nnrpd have some slight
variances from the NNTP protocol (although in normal use you will never notice); see the manpages. INN separates hosts that
feed you news from those that have users reading news. If you need to support a mixed environment you will have to do some
extra work; the installation manual gives some hints.

LXRun
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/lxrun
Lxrun is a user-space program that allows users of SCO(r)
OpenServer(tm), UnixWare(tm), and Sun(r) Solaris(tm) x86
operating systems to run ELF and a.out format Linux binaries. It
was originally written by Mike Davidson of SCO. In 1997, he
released the source code into the public domain. It is now
maintained as an open-development effort.

MRTG
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/mrtg
The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the
traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages
containing GIF images which provide a LIVE visual r. MRTG is
based on Perl and C and works under UNIX and Windows NT.
MRTG is being successfully used on many sites around the net.

Orca
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/orca
Orca is a tool useful for plotting arbitrary data from text files onto a
directory on a Web server. Based on MRTG.

Procmail
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/procmail
Procmail can be used to create mail-servers,
mailing lists, sort your incoming mail into separate
folders/files (real convenient when subscribing to one or
more mailing lists or for prioritising your mail),
preprocess your mail, start any programs upon mail
arrival (e.g. to generate different chimes on your
workstation for different types of mail) or selectively
forward certain incoming mail automatically to someone.

Sendmail
ftp://ftp.solarisguide.com/pub/sendmail
Sendmail's Open Source product line is for Open Source software
users that need to build their messaging infrastructure on proven
standards-based technology. Unlike proprietary alternatives,
sendmail is tested and bulletproofed under Eric Allman's
management by a worldwide network of technical experts, resulting
in the Internet's implementation standard for message transfer.
