The tiny COBOL project is a COBOL compiler being actively developed by members of the free software community.

It is being developed on the Linux OS, using a mix of C, LEX/YACC. It will generate GNU x86 assembler code, and will only run on a i386 Linux platform.

While our long term goal is to produce a COBOL compiler which is ANSI COBOL 85 compliant, our immediate goal is to produce a COBOL compiler which is ANSI COBOL 74 compliant, or at least as close possible.

In order to be easily integrated with the Linux OS environment, the compiler will also have the following COBOL language extensions.

  • Ability to read from from standard input and write to standard output/error.
  • Ability to read command line parameters.
  • Ability to read environmental parameters.
  • Ability to set a file name at run time.
  • Ability to set a program return code.
  • The Tiny COBOL compiler and run time library are licensed under the GNU General Public License.

Our work is hosted on servers generously provided by VA Linux Systems . Their SourceForge site provide homes to a multitude of open source developers.
