Dreamweaver 2: The Return

By David Fiedler

Can a sequel surpass the original?

Macromedia's Dreamweaver seems to be evolving from a product that had a reputation of being a nice design tool of special use for adding interactive elements to pages, to what's now becoming almost a "sleeper" product in the very competitive world of page creation tools with site management features.

In other words, Macromedia is going head-to-head with products like Microsoft's FrontPage and NetObjects' Fusion. It also fits right in there between them: intended for more professional users than FrontPage, simpler in concept than Fusion, yet perhaps more appealing to most serious Web developers than either one.

For our review of the original Dreamweaver, click here. In this review, we'll concentrate on some of Dreamweaver 2's newest features, which are exhaustively detailed here.

Dreamweaver 2 Windows requirements:

  • Intel Pentium® processor or equivalent 90+ MHz
  • Windows 95/98 or NT version 4.0 or later
  • 32 MB RAM
  • 20 MB of available disk space
  • 256-color monitor capable of 800x600 resolution
  • CD-ROM drive

Dreamweaver 2 Macintosh requirements:

  • Power Macintosh OS 7.5.5 or later
  • 24 MB of available RAM
  • 20 MB of available disk space
  • 256 color monitor capable of 800x600 resolution
  • CD-ROM drive

Dreamweaver 2 will be available in December 1998 simultaneously for Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0 or later, and MacOS 7.5.5 or later for $299. Like the first version, they will be including the latest version of either BBEdit or HomeSite as an HTML editor. Macromedia is offering upgrades for previous customers for as low as $99, and a specially-priced bundle that will include their Fireworks product ($399 for both, or $228 to upgrade from Dreamweaver 1 and get Fireworks also).
