Like many other O'Reilly books, DHTML: The Definitive Reference was written with the working Web developer in mind. This 1000+ page tome covers nearly every aspect of Dynamic HTML, providing examples, helpful comments, time-saving tips and techniques that will save the programmer both time and frustration.

Author Danny Goodman does a good job of pointing out browser-inconsistancies, browser-compatibility, how and when to compromise and make your pages backwards compatible. The first section of the book, which comprises about 150 pages, is entitled Applying DHTML. It covers Style Sheets, positioning elements, common positioning tasks, and other aspects of DHTML that the Web developer is likely to want to know.

The rest of the book is devoted to the DHTML reference, and it takes all 850+ pages to detail all of the HTML tags, CSS style attributes, browser document objects, and JavaScript objects that are currently a part of DHTML.

Another handy feature of DHTML: The Definitive Reference is the cross-reference index that makes it a simple task to find interrelated HTML tags, style attributes, and document objects.

You can get a feel for the book by reading the sample chapter, Chapter 2: Cross-Platform Compromises. Goodman has left no DHTML stone unturned, and tips such as how to write to other windows or frames, or how to redirect events can provide the developer with many new tricks to file away in their Web development arsenal for future use.

This is another of those books that you will wonder how you lived without. Although not geared towards beginners, those with a little HTML experience will have no problem getting up to speed. O'Reilly has done it again, as DHTML: The Definitive Reference is another gold mine of Web development know-how.
