Cooling a 600MHz Pentium III
Below are 3 screenshots showing how CpuIdle can keep the temperature downon those bad 600MHz Pentium III's.
Running without CpuIdle
The red cross in the taskbar indicates that CpuIdle is not activated. As you can see the Pentium III CPU is running at 600MHz and 51°C. At this time CpuIdle is beeing activated.
After running CpuIdle for only 15 seconds
15 seconds after CpuIdle has been activated. You can see that CpuIdle is running by the small thermometer in the taskbar. It shows green, meaning that the system is otherwise unoccupied and CpuIdle can use almost all CPU time for cooling.
Even after only 15 seconds the temperature of the CPU has dropped 17°C. If you know that 10°C less means double life span for an IC that's quite a feat!
After running CpuIdle for 45 seconds
30 more seconds have passed. 45 seconds after CpuIdle has first been activated the CPU temperature is down 20°C. This means that the life span is 4 times as long as without CpuIdle.
And even if you're not concerned about your CPU's time of life- think about the energy consumption. Or the strain on all the other electronic components in your closed PC case. Or the noise your fans generate. Perhaps you could remove one, or your temperature-controlled fan could turn slower?
