The Web is the "next logical step" in the evolution of computer use. We started with stand-alone systems, grew to small networks, struggled with enterprise-wide networks, and now we have the ability to connect across the world quickly, and relatively easily.

But the Web goes beyond simple connectivity, and provides us with a mechanism to present and access information much more easily than ever before. Prior to the Web many corporations were investing significant funds on this problem - connecting people to distributed information. And most, of not all, of the companies that were working on this problem were not satisfied with the results.

Next we'll look at how some companies are using the Web today.
