What is CobolScript?

CobolScript is a COBOL-based interpreted language that modernizes COBOL without compromising existing COBOL syntax, and opens the door to new and better opportunities for COBOL developers and anyone who wants to learn web development.

What can I do with CobolScript?

CobolScript can be used for building regular command-line and batch information systems, but it's even better suited for constructing internet, intranet, or network information systems. If you've worked with COBOL but aren't familiar with web development, CobolScript is your ticket to developing cutting-edge applications without having to learn a whole new programming language. If you haven't worked with COBOL and you don't yet know an internet development language, buying and learning CobolScript is the fastest and cheapest way for you to acquire web development skills, hands down.

Who came up with the idea for CobolScript?

Matt Dean and Charles Shereda, the CEO and CFO of Deskware, respectively, are the visionaries who came up with the concept of CobolScript. Mr. Dean holds a computer science degree from Purdue University, and Mr. Shereda an engineering degree from Cornell University. Mr. Dean and Mr. Shereda are experts in many programming languages, including COBOL, C, C++, Perl, Visual Basic®, Pascal, PL/SQL®, shell scripting, assembler, Java®, and JavaScript®. Both also combine their software development expertise with a rare business acumen. Their many years of experience as consultants to a number of Fortune 500 companies and government organizations taught them two important lessons:
  • First, not only are COBOL developers just as skilled as other programmers and generally more experienced, but COBOL programmers also rarely get the respect or compensation that they truly deserve;
  • Second, most businesses spend the majority of their information systems budgets and their programmers' time on maintaining existing systems, rather than on developing new ones. For this reason, when new systems are developed, they should always be developed in a programming language with clear and understandable code, to minimize maintenance effort and costs later. Languages that encourage code obfuscation should have no place in business systems.
For these reasons, Mr. Dean and Mr. Shereda came up with the concept for a new type of COBOL: A COBOL that would leverage the intelligence of COBOL programmers while revolutionizing the way internet development is done.

Why should I buy CobolScript?

If you're a COBOL programmer, your COBOL skills are invaluable; don't let anyone tell you differently. Chances are you deserve more respect, better projects, and fuller compensation than what you're currently getting. However, we all know that as the Year 2000 draws near and passes, corporate budgets for legacy systems work will decline almost without exception, and in some companies these monies will evaporate completely. What's worse, research shows that COBOL programmers, unlike other programmers, are largely expected by their employers to train themselves on their own time or pay for their own training. Like many other COBOL programmers, you may not have had fair opportunities to expand your expertise.

Clearly it's a critical time for COBOL programmers. Now more than ever, you need a tool that will enhance your skills repertoire while building on the value of your current knowledge. Completely abandoning your skill set and starting over from scratch is a difficult and unrewarding path, but up until now, you probably felt like you didn't have a choice.

CobolScript is the choice that you didn't even realize you had. There isn't another COBOL vendor with anywhere near the web development solution that Deskware has in CobolScript. If you already know COBOL, you are essentially an instant expert in CobolScript.

If you care about the value of your skills in the coming millenium, CobolScript is for you. If you're tired of maintaining legacy systems and you'd rather make more money developing new, exciting applications, CobolScript is for you. If you've ever been taken for granted, neglected, or treated unfairly because you're a COBOL programmer, CobolScript is for you. Or, if you just want to acquire new and different skills by building on your existing ones, then CobolScript is still for you.

If you don't know COBOL but you want to learn web development, then you already know that internet development skills will be in high demand well into the coming millenium. It's also a simple fact that employers pay a premium for those skills that are in high demand. Quite simply, buying and learning CobolScript is the easiest, fastest, and most inexpensive way for you to adopt internet development skills and increase your earning potential.

If you're a project manager or IT executive, you should know that CobolScript programming can be learned more quickly and with greater ease than languages with cryptic syntax like Perl. What's more, CobolScript programs are easier to write and maintain than programs in other internet programming languages such as Perl, VBScript®, or Java®. CobolScript will save you a lot of money in the long run, because you will bring your system to market more quickly and spend less time on maintenance than you would using other languages. If you already have COBOL programmers on your staff, you can quickly and easily transition them to web development projects instead of releasing them after the Y2K projects have ended. If you don't have COBOL programmers but need to expand your web development staff, migrating other developers to CobolScript projects will be easier and cheaper for you than training them in Perl or Java®.

For just $49.95 you can gain the competitive edge with CobolScript.
