Dave's   DGen   Emulator
it's all just a little bit of history repeating...
Download DGen here:
DGen v1.21 for Windows (read what's new in dgen.txt).

DGen is a free Genesis/Megadrive emulator for Windows 95/98/2000 (and possibly NT) running under DirectX. It has sound. Recommended computer is a Pentium-II. DGen is open source, so you can download the source code and produce versions for other operating systems perhaps!

Dave's Genesis Tests
If you have a Genesis and a backup unit, please visit the above page.

Dave 27th Jan '00:
Evening all. Hope you like the latest version. If you have any trouble with spaced out or squashed or generally messed up graphics, try pressing F3 (this switches between rendering engines).
Just about everyone who isn't playing Herzog Zwei would probably be best to use my Line Renderer (number 2) actually!

Dave 23th Jan '00:
If I were you I'd avoid playing Phantasy Star 4 on DGen - it has a problem where the screen blanks and the game crashes on some battles a fair way into the game. That would certainly annoy me if I was playing it...
Haven't a clue what's causing it. I get a few e-mails every week about this.
Other games with trouble are WarSong and Shining Force 2 I think.
Regarding old versions and speed, any idea which was the best version in terms of speed? Speed seems to have really dropped between 1.00 and 1.19, but it's hard to say where the code was the 'best' (e.g. speed/compat tradeoff).
Dave 20th Jan '00:
The dgen119.zip file was corrupt so I've reuploaded it as dgen119a.zip
. I've set up a new page dealing with Genesis experiments. Please visit it if you have a Genesis and a backup unit. I've had a good response of about five people so far and some useful results in.

Take notice of this before sending me any mail:

  1. No ROM requests.
  2. Asking is always better than demanding.
  3. If it's about the Mac version, don't ask me (click on the below Mac/OS link).
  4. Ask before sending files bigger than 100k.
  5. I will not be adding Sega CD, 32X, or DSP (e.g. Virtua Racing) support to DGen.
  6. DGen needs a fast computer to run.
  7. I know about the lagging/slow sound problems.
  8. I know about the fullscreen problems.
  9. I know that interpolation/higher resolution would be nice.
Believe it or not this accounts for about 90% of my mail!
Please go ahead and ask the other 10%.

DGen/MacOS!
Richard Bannister and many others have been working hard to port DGen to MacOS and also have added a lot of code!
Questions specifically about the Mac version are probably best directed to them, since they know a lot more about Macs than I do.
New!:
DGen/Linux!!!
This version is by Joe Groff, who has also added loads of code!! His version uses the Simple Directmedia Layer (SDL) library.
The BeOS version page is also linked from Joe's page I think.
