Baltimore, MD (March 24, 1999) -- The end of March not only brings us spring, but also a renewal of a different sort. Along with the flowering bulbs, robin red-breast, and exhibition baseball comes the annual Business Week issue of the Top Companies of the S&P 500.
To review for new readers, a number of years ago we searched far and wide for an appropriate database from which to choose our 30 Beating the S&P (BSP) stocks. We decided to use the Business Week listing because it presented all the necessary data in one tidy package. The listing was also the most authoritative, accessible, and established we could find.
Then, once we had had developed carefully chosen ground rulesfor choosing our specific 30 BSP stocks, all we had to do was to apply them to come up with an annually updated list of the stocks from which all our subsequent investments would be made for the year.
