OK, OK glass is a solid COMMENT re: Sony's plastic hard drives From: Dave M Glass is not a liquid, it is an amorphous solid. Yes, it does flow (so your point about making HD platters out of it may be valid) but so does sand (and I don't think you are going to call sand a liquid). They both flow on the same principle except that sand does it on a macroscopic level and glass does it on a microscopic or molecular level. Don't get my wrong, I enjoy this site immensely and like you're format of reporting the facts and following them with a clearly marked commentary. I just couldn't resist commenting. From: Dave J Check out: From: T Considering that a Hard Drive would act like a big centrifuge, I would suspect in a matter of months, variance in the density of the platters from the hub out would change and lead to a head crash or at least a dramatic enough change in the distance between the head and surface to cause read errors. Just look at a window over about 10 years old and see the slight distortion - and it's only under gravity's pull, not spinning (unless your house is possessed, like mine!) Although, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't SyQuest 44/88 disks glass platters? UGEEK
RESPONSE Yes, it's true! Glass is a solid. Many readers pointed out that fact. If you check the "Urban Myth" site about it above, you'll see that this dubious fact made it into high school textbooks - including one that I read. They even gave the example about window panes getting wider at the bottom over the years. So much for schools. Anyway, I believe SyQuest did make glass platters, and I never heard of any problems with them caused by this type of malformation. It does seem odd that glass would be used as it is more fragile than plastic. Imagine dropping a drive and your platters snap in half. Ouch.
