Don't cut the power

QUESTION

Here's my system:

  • Intel Pentium III 450
  • 13 GB hard drive
  • 96 MB RAM
  • SoundBlaster32 sound card
  • 56Kbps modem
  • 17-inch CRT
  • Windows 98

How long should I leave my computer on before turning it off?

--Meflux

ANSWER
My computer has been on for the past several months. I have to "restart" it once in a while due to misbehaving Windows 98 programs, but there is no reason to turn your computer off, other than to save power and keep your computer room cooler when you're not using it.

If you have a bad power situation, such as brown-outs or surges, you will want to make sure that you've got a decent UPS (uninterruptable power supply) installed. Personally, I live outside of Boston, and I've never used a UPS. Call me crazy, but I haven't had any weird computer problems. I suppose I'm blessed with good power, and my 300 Watt power supply doesn't hurt either.

You can consider whether to use power-saving features such as turning your monitor or hard drive off after not using your computer for a while. I disable all that junk and just shut my monitor off at night, but I admit I'm a fanatic.

Some even claim that leaving your computer on indefinitely gives you a longer life to your components, as they don't have to be jarred every day by going from 0 power to having power run through them.
