QUESTION

Here's my system:

  • Cyrix 6x86MX 200 MHz Desktop
  • 32 MB RAM
  • several hard drives
  • CD-ROM drive
  • 28.8 Kbps modem
  • WD VGA video card
  • 15" monitor
  • Windows 95

I just bought a GCT-8IV motherboard made by Global Circuit Technology that is supposed to run up to a 200 MHz processor with MMX; but the Cyrix is a dual voltage chip and I cannot find, in the book or on the Web, how to set the board up for dual voltage.

Can you help?

--Larry

ANSWER

The dual voltage concept means that your processor runs at one voltage and your I/O at another voltage--3.3 volts. The dual voltage concept came about as processor voltages dipped below 3.3 volts, and the I/O channels talking to the processor remained at 3.3 volts.

You don't really have to do anything special to set up for dual voltage. You just have to make sure that the manual shows you how to set the correct voltage for your processor. The Cyrix 6x86MX running at 200 MHz should be set at 2.8 volts according to a motherboard manual I have. If your motherboard can do that, just set it, plug it in, and pump it up.
