posted: 4/21/99 QUESTION Here's my system:
You guys are great. I love your site. I just screwed this PC together and I'm having a hard time playing Quake online. I can't catch any one. I move like a slug most of the time. I connect at 45 Kb/s or better, but it's still really slow. I'm planning to buy an AMD K6-2 300 processor, but is that enough? Any help is useful. Thanks. --Kris ANSWER Well, let me first say that flattery will buy you nothing, except for a response. First, you should probably make sure that "always run" is set to "on." That could be part of why you are moving slowly. For standard Quake, a 300 MHz processor should be pretty decent. After upgrading your processor, you will find out just how good your Internet connection is. Part of the choppiness is probably caused by your modem, as opposed to a cable modem or another connection, but getting off of that raggedy Pentium 100 will certainly help. You can eliminate some of the advantage by only playing in games with all modem users and low ping times. If you are on a Pentium 100 and you encounter someone using a Pentium II 450, you will still probably get smoked. Higher speed, higher resolution machines have the advantage.
