Pass  Initial Boot 

The system booted correctly "out of the box". Upon first boot up the computer runs through a configuration script that will set up the system options. This script set up the system properly.

Pass  General 

This Laptop has been configured to use Redhat 6.1 Linux "Out of the Box" and is shipped with a very nice 15" viewable screen.

Pass  Hardware Installed 

Hardware inventory:
  • CPU: 500Mhz Pentium III
  • Memory: 64 Megs
  • Video: ATI 3D Rage Pro Mobility 8192Kb VRAM
  • Sound: ESS Maestro Audiodrive
  • Modem: Lucent Software modem
  • Toshiba MK 4313 MAT, 4126Mb
  • Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2302

Pass  System Partitioning: Partitioning of /dev/hda

The system was partitioned as follows:

Pass  Video Adapter 

The ATI video card was configured correctly by the system installer.

Pass  APM 

This was tested by both closing the lid and letting it suspend initiating from hardware, and by running the command "APM -s" as root.

Pass  Modem 

The Lucent modem shipped with this system works with "wvdial" on "/dev/ttyS14".

Pass  PCMCIA 

The PCMCIA works properly as shipped, and is running Cardmanager Services version 3.0.14.

Pass  Sound Card 

The Maestro Sound card works correctly out of the box. However the Maestro Sound cards are capable of duplexing (playing more then one sound at a time). If you wish to enable duplexing you will need to do the following from the command prompt:
  • cd /dev
  • rmmod maestro
  • mknod audio0 c 14 4 (this file may exist but is not configured correctly)
  • mknod audio1 c 14 20i (this file may exist already and seems to be configured correctly)
  • mknod audio2 c 14 36
  • mknod audio3 c 14 52
  • mknod dsp0 c 14 3 (this file may exist but is not configured correctly)
  • mknod dsp1 c 14 19 (this file may exist already and seems to be configured correctly)
  • mknod dsp2 c 14 35
  • mknod dsp3 c 14 51
  • insmod maestro dsps_order=3
This will set up your system to make use of the duplexing capability of the maestro.

note: You may want to change the line "insmod maestro" in the
"/etc/conf.modules" to "insmod maestro dsps_order=3" to activate duplexing
at boot time. (keep in mind that these drivers are still in development,
so stability and functionality may depend on the specific release installed on your system.

Pass  X Window System Configuration 

The system was preconfigured to use KDE by default, using a resolution of 1024x768 and a color depth of 32bps.

Pass  Infrared Port 

The kernel recognized the infrared port as a standard serial port, using the device node /dev/ttyS1. Functionality of the device was verified by setting up a ppp connection between the test system and another laptop computer over their infrared ports.
