A group calling itself Pentaguard simultaneously cracked government websites in the United States, England and Australia. The group replaced the home pages of the sites over the weekend with a statement reading "The largest .gov & .mil mass defacement in the history of mankind." It caused the temporary disruption of at least two dozen sites.

The effort was managed across time zones and across platforms, according to Attrition.org, a hacker tracking outfit. According to Attrition.org, the break-ins were not random; targets were selected for their relation to topical issues. Two sites in the United States were hacked, along with seven in Britain and 15 in Australia.
