Prioritizing patches: A precipitous pandemonium

Is the patching of mission critical systems and related software a priority for your business? May I suggest that patching such software become an imperative task incorporated into an IT position ASAP. Recent virus outbreaks and increases in overall attacks have resulted in a precipitous pandemonium for IT administrators and managers who failed to make patching and security a high priority.

Why make security and patching a priority? While many exploits and attacks remain unpublished, there are a few surveys and studies that highlight the importance of security. The Computer Crime and Security Survey 2001 identifies 85 percent of respondents as having detected computer security breaches within the last year; 186 respondents reported a total loss of US$377,828,700 due to such breaches.
