In most cases, the Internet Explorer download page will recommend a specific browser for your computer. Simply click the Next button and run the program from its current location (Windows users) or download it the your hard drive (Macintosh and UNIX users). If you don't see a recommendation, follow the instructions below. You can customize your installation during the setup, adding additional components, by choosing the Customize Your Installation option. Windows users can also add components later by choosing Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Add/Remove Programs list in the Control Panel, or by visiting the Windows Update site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

1 On the Internet Explorer download page, click the offering you want to download.

*Windows
*Macintosh

Windows Users:

a) We recommend you click "Run this program from its current location."

b) If you choose Save As, select the location on your hard drive where you want to save the Internet Explorer setup files. After the setup files have been saved to your hard drive, and while you're still connected to the Internet, run setup by double-clicking the setup.exe now located on your hard drive. (For Internet Explorer 5 this will be ie5setup.exe, for Internet Explorer 4 this will be ie4setup.exe.)

c) In the first setup dialog box, select which package of Internet Explorer Components you want to download.

Macintosh Users:

a) Click "Download link to disk."

b) Click Desktop then click Save. After the download is complete, a .bin or .hqx file will appear on your desktop.

c) Use your decompression program to decompress and decode the file. If you have installed Stuffit Expander, you will only need to drag the file onto the Expander icon, and the file will unstuff to reveal an installer icon. If you are running Internet Explorer 3.0 or later, the file will decompress automatically.

d) Double-click the Installer icon.

e) Read the End User License Agreement and click Accept.

f) Read the detailed instructions and click Next. If you are installing with the Active Setup Installer, choose whether to download only or to install completely, then click Next. Choose a type of installation by doing one of the following:
Choose a preconfigured installation option.
Choose Custom Install to change the configuration, then click the boxes to the left of each component you want to install. (To view a component's description, click the box containing an "I" to the right of the component).

g) In the Install Location area, go to the pop-up menu and choose the disk and folder where you want to install Internet Explorer. Complete the installation by doing one of the following:
If you are using the Active Setup Installer, click the Use Proxy checkbox if you use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, in which case you must also enter the server name and port. Click Next. Select the download location closet to you and click Next to download your customized installer. Then click Next again to launch you customized installer. When the installation is complete, you are ready to run Internet Explorer.
If you have not using the Active Setup Installer, click Install. After installation is complete, click Restart. You are now ready to run Internet Explorer.

UNIX Users:

a) In the File Download dialog box, you must choose the default, "Save this file to disk."

b) Make the new download executable: "chmod +x ieXsetup" (where "X" is the version number in "ieXsetup").

c) Run the executable; for example: "./ieXsetup".

d) When Setup prompts for an installation directory, either accept the default directory or type in a new directory path and name. (Note that installing to the default directory, /usr/local/microsoft, may require that you be logged in as root.)

e) After Internet Explorer is installed, you can start the browser by running "installation directory/bin/iexplorer".
