The T.Rex Security Project

The T.Rex Security Project is a collaborative software development effort focused on creating a suite of industrial strength open source network security tools. The project offers freely available source code that is developed by experts from around the world. The project is managed by Freemont Avenue Software located in Houston, Texas. The purpose of this document is to recognize the many contributors who have developed the existing code and to encourage input from others.

T.rex was announced as an open source security suite February 10, 2000. Although the T.Rex Security Suite is new much of its technology is derived from existing industrial strength programs that have been available for years either as proprietary products or as open source programs. Some of the firewall proxies and supporting programs have been used world wide for more than five years and gone through as many as ten revisions.

Contributors to the Firewall Technology

The following group of contributors have designed, developed, tested and supported the core of the firewall technology. This group includes programmers, technical writers and quality assurance people.

Many of our best ideas have come from the users of the programs and we would like to acknowledge their contributions even though we are not allowed to name them.

We owe much to the late W. Richard Stevens whose text books and sample code made our life much easier. Parts of several programs were also extracted from code developed by Wietse Venema.

Contributors to the Circuit Proxy

The SOCKS V5 server is based on Dante which was developed by Inferno Nettverk A/S Norway.

The httpd proxy is a derivative of the Apache web server with the following modifications made by Freemont Avenue Software: (1) compiled as a proxy-only daemon, (2) URL content filtering added, (3) parallel I/O for significant gains in cache performance.
