Drew's old garage band reunites for a contest, but bad-singer Kate threatens to ruin everything on The Drew Carey Show (9 p.m., ABC). Having gotten all that singing and dancing out of their system, the doctors of Chicago Hope (10 p.m., CBS) get back to business this week. Aaron makes a slow recovery, Kronk is asked to perform a voluntary castration and Grad has to break bad news to an HIV-positive teenager. ABC announced its November sweeps specials yesterday, and amid the usual ratings-magnet dreck (I Survived a Disaster 3, the network TV premiere of The Santa Clause) were some interesting prospects. A colorblind-casting version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (Nov. 2) stars Brandy (the star of Moesha) in the title role, Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother, Bernadette Peters as the nasty stepmother and Paolo Montalban as the Prince. There's also a TV movie adaptation of Jon Krakauer's nonfiction bestseller Into Thin Air (Nov. 9), which re-creates the harrowing story of an ill-fated Everest expedition, and a Wonderful World of Disney production of Oliver Twist (Nov. 16) starring Richard Dreyfuss and Elijah Wood. And, OK, if it's ratings-magnet cheese you want, there's always Gail O'Grady, Chris Noth, Lori Loughlin, John Glover and Martin Sheen in the four-hour miniseries Medusa's Child (Nov. 16 and 17), about a nuclear warhead planted on a cargo plane and set to explode over Washington, D.C., unless the plane's crew can defuse the bomb.
