Microsoft has announced the release of an enhanced version of Interix that will allow customers to run Unix applications and scripts on Windows 2000 and NT without rewriting code, according to Computer Reseller News. The purpose of the product is to migrate Unix customers to Windows. Some information about the product is available from the Microsoft Interix page.

Sun is explaining how the Java Web Server is affected by the recent CERT Advisory CA-2000-02. This advisory discusses how malicious scripting code could be executed on the client browser from an unauthorized source. Sun has not addressed this with regards to iPlanet yet.

Bruce Perens, a key player in the development of the concept of open software, said Sun Microsystems deserves credit on recent open source announcements, according to Techweb. The article discusses the tenets behind the Industry Standards Source License, which Sun is using for some products like NFS. This represents a significant positive reaction from an Open Source leader, while many other's have been negative or simply don't trust Sun.

Okay, okay, I've received far enough messages to start up a Solaris administrator certification mailing-list. No need to send anymore, just keep on eye on this site for news : WebMaster has been kind enough to offer to host the mailing-list, it should be starting by the end of this week (Feb 11th 2000 ?). In the wake of Sun's case study on the growth of the Application Service Provider market,they have forged an agreement with Managemark to integrate StarOffice with their online Expensable.com financial applications, according to Information Week. As part of the agreement, Managemark will use Sun hardware for their applications.

In a rather critical article, The Register downplays Sun's attempt to give away the source to NFS. Many years ago Sun published the specifications for NFS in order to allow alternate implementations, thereby making it work accross platforms. Now they are funding the Linux port of version 4 at the University of Michigan. One must ask how much does Sun have to give until their generosity is appreciated by the GPL-friendly press.

Sun Wednesday is expected to announce an agreement with Trademark Computers to sell Linux-based UltraSPARC clones through the US Sun reseller channel, according to ZD Net. This is the first time Sun resellers have been able to get UltraSPARC-based hardware and Linux from a single source. Sun appears to be keeping an eye on the bottom line, their hardware.

A ZD Net article asks a very blunt question regarding why Windows is so insecure. Security is a complex issue and Microsoft claims to be the target of bad press, but their track record is quite poor. One of the leading reasons for security problems may be that Microsoft is more interested in adding features than making the existing system robust.

The Sun-Netscape Alliance will soon ship wireless software, called iPlanet Wireless Server, that will let people access their email, calendars and address books from their cell phones and other handheld devices, according to News.com. The article also discusses a few other iPlanet products which will be available also for Linux.

The XMMS Plug in for Solaris is an add on to the X Multimedia System. XMMS itself is a general tool for playing audio on Unix under X and the latest version of the plugin supports the latest version of XMMS. XMMS requires the GTK library to compile and run.

In a Linux Today article they interviewed Miles Barel, IBM's program director for Unix marketing, to comment on the Sun's new licensing and pricing strategy for Solaris 8. He doubts that anyone could compile the Solaris source code because of proprietary third-party portions of the code which aren't open. Barel believes that Sun is pandering to the open source community and causing product confusion, a justification for why IBM's AIX remains closed source. The article also discusses some AIX technologies which were available before the release of Solaris 8.

An OS Opinion article contemplates weather Sun is missing the point, or purpose, with regards to opening up Solaris. Specifically, the article recognizes that the opened up source isn't free in the sense of the GPL, but it does give developers a chance to work under the hood of the system. The article acknoledges the maturity of Solaris and the different market segment of Solaris and Linux. Ironically, it closes with an assertion that Sun is copying the Linux strategy... For so many years we all knew that Linux was copying the concept of other unices, and now somehow that is different?

Whenever Sun gives something away some people get nervous. The thought of a multi-billion dollar company being willing to let go a little troubles some in the press, it seems. A Red Herring article says that Sun is opening the source as a means to strike back at Linux, but the SCSL is not very open. ZD Net chimes in with its criticism that for $75 you get a "freeish" operating system that requires you to notify Sun if you modify the source code. IT Director seems to be the only voice of reason, noting that the previous cost was $199 to $449 for the typical desktop. Selling Solaris for $75, which basically covers shipping and the bundled applications, isn't quite free, but for anyone who has payed for the base operating system before this is an excellent move forward.

According to a Q3 1999 server survey from IDC, Sun was the top company, for hardware revenue and shipments, for every single segment of the Unix market, and for both the "high-end" and "mid-range" general OS markets - includes Windows etc. "mid-range" = >$100,000, "high-end" = >$1,000,000.

It'll be even worse for Sun's main rivals in these markets (IBM and HP) in the 4th quarter, considering their respective 4th quarter reports.
