Internet.com's
Fall
Internet World opens in New York City this week. Streaming
Media World will be on hand to roam the exhibits and hunt
for the newest streaming products and services. Is their hype in
the air? You bet. But mixed in with all the usual press releases
and marketing slogans will be a few precious gems we'll cover on
this site. And events like these always give me the opportunity
to show off my opinionated Irish nature. Stay tuned.
You
need a vacation. It's still not too late to catch the Streaming
Media Europe conference
on October 19-20 in Amsterdam. Billed as Europe's largest streaming
media event, you'll find sessions and exhibits from usual host of
characters.

In
my other life, I teach Web multimedia to students by way of streaming
media. Seems like such a nice fit doesn't it? The problem is that
producing that kind of online content is incredibly time consuming
and requires a level of skill outside of what most other educators,
trainers, sales people, or motivational speakers are likely to have.
Into the void steps Alive
e-Show. In a fraction of the time that it would normally
take to create Web pages, narrate to those pages, encode the audio,
and time that audio back to the Web pages, e-Show
helps you prepare an online
streaming presentation easily. Read
my review and then take the evaluation
copy for a test drive yourself.

Animation
buffs will love taking a look at a new 3D streaming format brought
out by Brilliant
Digital Entertainment.
Their B3D toolkit allows animators
to stream 3D Studio Max animations. It is a bit hefty for dial up
but DSL and faster users will enjoy the 3D animation that pours
into your Windows PC. Check out their new
Superman demo for a taste. As Bing would sing, I'm dreaming
of a broadband Christmas...
Security
for your streaming media just isn't sexy. But if you are feeding
sensitive corporate or legal information, it had better get sexy
fast. Who knows who might be snooping all of those packets streaming
by? RPK's
SecureMedia
with the Encryptonite engine
currently supports G2 streaming.
Give it
a try on their Web site.
Apple's
conference for QuickTime fans
is rapidly taking shape. A more complete
schedule of events for QuickTime Live,
held November 8-11 in L.A., is
now posted online.

RealNetworks
is expected to unveil the plus version of their streaming slideshow
authoring tool this week. Is RealSlideshow
Plus a noticeable improvement? If you author streaming pictures
professionally, you will find RealSlideshow Plus better adapted
to the corporate market.
Take a look at the new layout window and read up the new features
at Just SMIL.

Stream
Anywhere, Sonic Foundry's
tool that allows you to, well, stream anywhere, is now out of beta
and shipping. The tool is being promoted as the all encompassing
solution for preparing streaming audio and video on the Windows
platform. Priced as a downloadable at $199, Stream Anywhere supports
both Windows Media Technologies and RealNetworks G2 output in the
same function. That's right, you can give users a choice. A free
trial download and more info is available
from their Web site.
In
between working on tutorials and reviews this week, I've received
announcements on a range of new streaming portals. Of
note is Like Television, a site that currently features
classic TV and movies with a mix of new offerings as well. For DSL
users and beyond, you'll find fast streams and larger windows to
enjoy. So if you want to relive your youth (or your father's youth)
and catch an episode of Dragnet, Like
Television is the place to go.
RealNetworks is making the rounds with their
series of authoring seminars starting next week. They will
be in Austin, TX (September 14), Chicago, IL (September 16), and
Boston, MA (September 21). Real Developer Members get in free. It
will cost $295 for the rest of you. Visit
their Web site for more details.
