U.S.-Canada Utilities Say Leap-Year Switch OK (02/29/00, 1:21 p.m. ET) By Reuters WASHINGTON, D.C. -- North American electric utilities have experienced no leap year-related computer problems on Tuesday, alleviating concerns that the second coming of Y2K would disrupt power service, according to the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC). Some 3,100 power providers, coordinated through NERC regional offices, recorded no power disruption as Feb. 29 arrived. "Everything is green [go] for all utilities in the U.S. and Canada," said Gerry Cauley, a spokesman for NERC. "We reported no problems of any kind." Monitoring for leap year problems will not end until clocks run through midnight GMT and midnight EST on March 1. Electric industry officials had expected their computers to handle the changeover to the 29th with no crisis, since computer systems were safeguarded from this year's unique leap date at the same time Y2K fixes were installed last year.
