  · So like, the DC has "this" many bits... ·

Input

Hi,

I [read] your article Dreamcast -VS- Playstation 2, it says that the Dreamcast has a 64bit CPU?!?! Am I crazy? Isn't the Dreamcast a 128-bit system?

Thanks

Joe

Response

Well actually, according to Robotopia who called up Hitachi, he relayed that the R&D representative told him that the SH-4 board is a 128-bit floating point graphics core which works in tangent with the CLX1 chip, which is also known as the Power VR2. I did my own checking back on my specs sheet and it does in fact list that the system has a 64-bit address bus.

  · Classic Contra code really is... ·

Input

I believe it's select start( the Contra code).

Spencer

Response

It's still right, you hit select if you want two players...if it makes you feel better, you can get a piece of tape, write "select" on it, and tape it to your monitor, and then my bio will be the "2 player" edition. OK?

  · Info for NHL 2K ·

Input

I was wondering if you had any info on DC NHL2K?

Matt Mckendrick

Response

Not yet...we're still getting our mits on all information for the upcoming basketball sensation - NBA 2K. It's unlikely you'll be hearing about that right now. I am due to give the folks at Sega a call very soon, be assured that once information is released, TNL will be all over it! :)

  · Shame on us? ·

Input

I clicked on the link and scrolled down the page and didn't see any link for the contest. What a scam.

Cedric Hendley

Response

Scam? It wasn't a scam...we encountered a mixup in the javascript, thus anyone who clicked on the ad before it came to my attention were sent to the Cybereps homepage. We have better things to do then to develop schemes just for a click-through. Besides, what benefit would that do us if it was? Something to think about. In any event, the contest has been tempoarily been put on hold until next month! We apologize for the inconvience.

  · TNL to cover JoJo? ·

Input

I was wondering if you guys might review the PS conversion of JoJos Venture cause I don't see the big sites doing so....cool site.

Later

NMX1

Response

Hmm, JoJo's Venture eh? All depends if we actually decide to get our hands on it. It's not as if it will be provided to us, hehe! However, there are a number of editors on the team which import games (like myself). It's very likely but don't hold your breath!

  · Will DC get DVD? ·

Input

Is or isn't Dreamcast gonna get a DVD addition to the Zip-drive? It would really be a GREAT IDEA, that way when PSX 2 comes, people will have already seen DVD so they won't buy PSX2 cuz their Dreamcast [has it already].

PhenixKNT

Response

Good question, but you should know that even Bahn doesn't know what Sega's got up their sleeves. The only official new peripheral that's been developed is the Zip drive...the system could easily support DVD through an add-on module, but nothing has been formally announced. Sega could've easily implemented a DVD function in the Dreamcast (which also would've hiked up the cost, take note Sony). Don't get me wrong, I'd like a DVD player as much as the next person, and I am sure somewhere on Sega's timetable, that will be considered. We can only wait and see.

  · PlayStation 2 games can be played on PlayStation? ·

Input

Will Playstation 2 games work on Playstation?

Jason

Response

Nope, absolutely not. Think about it, if PlayStation 2 games could work on PlayStation, they wouldn't be making a new piece of hardware. However, you will be able to play your PlayStation games on PlayStation 2.

  · I wanna play NFL 2k ·

Input

I seen the story on your news but for some reason it will not let me see it. I want nfl 2k real bad so if you can explain how to do this swap trick i would be grateful.

Thanks

Jason Harris

Response

Hmm, are you sure? I personally looked at the page the same day that I received your letter as I printed up the article to show a few customers at a local gaming store. The method is quite simple actually.

First, you need to have a copy of the November Official Dreamcast Magazine, this comes bundled with the demo disc which will allow you to unlock the hidden secrets and beyond (ok, it will just let ya play NFL 2k...heh).

Next, start up the game on your system as if you were going to play the disc. Once it loads up the game menu screen (which highlights the available games to play or view a non-playable demo). At this point, reset your system by holding the four buttons (X, Y, B, and A) along with the Start button. This will bring you back to the system menu. With the demo disc still inside of your system, hit the "Play" function in the menu...the Sega logo will appear, once it disappears, immediately open the CD door, thus stopping the demo disc. Switch the demo disc with a copy of NFL 2k, close the door and voila, the game should boot up automatically with no problems. If it still doesn't work, um, contact your local witch doctor. :)

  · DC trick, um...don't work?·

Input

Hey Bahn!

I tried that "play US games on an import Dreamcast" trick that you suggested...and it didn't work! I tried it on a Japanese Dreamcast (the one with the Japanese guy on the box), and even on an Asian one (the one with the plain orange and white box). And it didn't work on either....the system attempted to load the disk but it just resets over and over....I don't think I'm doing anything wrong....hmmm. Maybe you'll get some feedback? Maybe it only works on certain models??? We'll have to wait and see I guess.

WhoaMoses

I read the section where you said you could trick your Japanese DC to play American games. I tried the trick with MK Gold and it did not work. Do you all know anyway else to trick your DC to play American games?

Jello6891

Response

Nope, the trick works. Tried it myself as I own NFL 2k and play it on my import system. Jason Harris wrote in as well, the method was described for him as well in the Letters section. I believe we expressed it as accurately as possible. Perhaps it's because you don't have the November disc as we specified. Plus, it only works for NFL 2k, no other games worked as I reported last week. The trick works with the disc because the 'territorial code' was not implemented into the software and miraculously NFL 2k worked. All is not lost though as there's a new swap method that I just discovered. Head over to Gaming Age for the full report.

  · State of Street Fighter feedback ·

Input

Dear TNL,

We would like to commend you on your editorial by Sabin about the state of Street Fighter. That article is the best that we have read in a long time. We would appreciate the opportunity to write to Sabin. If you could provide us with Sabin's email, we would be grateful. Thank you,

Jello/Ninja

Response

No need to thank us...since it was Sabin that wrote the article. He's just one of the many individuals over at Perfect Zero that simply tell it like it is. As for providing ya with Sabin's email...well, you'll have to hop over to Perfect Zero to obtain his email (provided his actual email is on his staff page). You sure you two aren't trying to stalk him for an autograph or something?

  · Whoo, you said it... ·

Input

Hello. My name is Robin Toledo.

I just recently stumbled into your website and must say that I am impressed. I am 23 and consider myself to be a passionate, hardcore gamer (meaning that I take gaming seriously and appreciate them as works of art in the right developers hands...mainly Japanese hands) but first and foremost, I am a Segafanboy, even though I also own 3 PSX's (US, modded US, Japanese), Turbo Duo, SNES, N64, and unfortunately a 3DO, in addition to owning a Genesis, Sega CD, 3 Saturns and 2 DC's.

The reason why I'm submitting this letter is to respond to Ven's post on the forum titled "Nihon-a-phobia". Anyone who hasn't read it should, as what he described in his post accurately reflect the attitudes of your typical American gamer towards videogames and how they appreciate them for all the wrong reasons. Also, I'm responding through the letters section because I couldn't through the forum, probably because of the DC Browser's limitations...oh well.

Anyway, the responses he received from the other "gamers" in that chat room enraged me. I have started to have strong negative feelings toward American gamers after seeing how they killed the Saturn (yes, I blame the Saturn's death on American gamers, but that is another story) and how they have been bashing Sega all these years starting with the Sega CD (and now, all of a sudden, a lot of these undeserving, uncaring morons are turning aroung and praising Sega after seeing the Dreamcast in action). Or how about what type of games American gamers buy and play: endless, senseless sports games, violent games like Mortal Kombat and Doom, tasteless games like Duke Nukem and Southpark, and other garbage like Cruisin' USA, Killer Instinct, Turok, and Superman 64, just to name a few, that constantly drown the NPD Group's top selling games list month after month.

After seeing all this happening in this side of the Pacific, I can't blame Ven or any other self-respecting gamer losing interest in the American gaming scene and turning to importing for refuge. To answer Ven's question, no there is absolutely nothing wrong with you, and don't let these American gaming heathens intimidate you in any way. To read about these mindless people ripping real gamers like Ven in chat rooms just because he has a mind of his own angers me. I'm sure these same people, as most American gamers are nowadays, just started playing video games with the Playstation (or maybe were brainwashed by Sony's "hip" marketing campaigns into thinking that videogaming is a "hip" and "cool" thing to do) and think that they know everything there is to know about this rotting hobby.

Also, the great majority of these people don't know the difference between a sprite and a polygon, a good game from a bad game, and would rather play games to be a badass in a game or beat their friends at sports games or other competitive games because the are "da man". People here just don't appreciate games for what they are: a conglomeration of different arts (visual, sound, gameplay, computer programming). Rather, they use games to inflate their egos (for example, everytime you strike a conversation with your typical American gamer and bring up a competitive game, you'll almost always hear them babble about how they are the best in that particular game, and that no one can ever beat them). I read some of the responses to Ven's post and remember reading someone saying that his flamers are just jealous that they don't have the real versions of the games...to an extent, I agree, but I also think that they are just a bunch of idiots (please note that is MY opinion).

I've rambled on for too long now. But before I leave, let me say, to Ven, keep on import gaming...the few people like us are the real gamers in this country and never forget that.

Robert Toledo
Saturn fanatic

Response

Jeez man...are you sure you don't talk for a living? You need to be a spokesman. Sorry we had to cut down your letter, it's been posted on the forum for anyone that wants the 'full version'. I read through alot of what you said and you made up some good points albeit getting a bit too patriotic or something, but that's my take. As the thread has continued to be discussed (met with much criticism as of recent from some new forum visitors), it's up to each and every gamer if he/she wants to import. No one should judge or tear down one's choice as to how they want to invest their money. There's lots of piracy going on, and even at times, I personally don't appreciate it, but it exists and I won't necessarily codemn those that indulge in it so wholeheartedly as a less enthused or hardcore gamer due to the channels they utilize for gaming entertainment. In any event, thanks for bringing up your perspective, keep the letters comin!

  · Trickstyle mini-game ·

Input

HI, I have Trickstyle and on the case it says you can use the mini VMU game to unlock features in the actual game. How do you do that?

Ryu121274

Response

Who me? I don't...I hardly played Trickstyle. Seriously though, when you save your data onto your VMU, you can later access the mini game which is accessed in the section menu function (symbolized by the trump card icon). It's a basic, "hit the X" type of game. Using the VMU's d-pad, guide the moving err, beam towards the "+" which is randomly placed on the screen upon every succesful goal of reaching the mark. The game ends if you crash into a wall, or run crash the beam into yourself (think of the cycles from Tron...) so you can't run into your own "beam" for example. The data accordingly will unlock other features hidden in Trickstyle (what they are is beyond me). We'll try and do some diggin for ya and notify ya via email.

  · It's dem Idiots Bahn... ·

Input

Idiots at my school keep going "oh don't get a DC, the PlayStation2 is going to be [insert absurd number here]x better." Someone even said "he saw" a game with fmv quality graphics! What should I do to tell these idiots straight?

Chilip Chan

Response

First off, stop callin em idiots...you're liable to get beat up after school or they may gang up on ya and steal your VMU that you play during lunch breaks. :)

There's alot of 'he said, they said' chatter running around and our forum is no exception to it. I've found similar discussions in other forums, chat rooms and gaming shops alike. There's a large portion of the gaming public that's intent on purchasing the PlayStation 2 and aren't intrigued at what Dreamcast has to offer.

To those types, you simply need to let them be. Honestly though, PlayStation 2 sports some more powerful stuff and even the most jaded gamer or one-sided enthusiast would be crazy not to acknowledge excellence when it's in their face. But, these are merely preliminary graphics, developed on kits (which apparently are too powerful according to recent reports to be continued with the aid of PC's, which is why Sony is now implementing their own workstations to achieve the highest quality in their titles). It's too early to tell, but I really hope Sony isn't biting off more than they can chew. Already there's talk of a PlayStation 3, downloadable media and such through cable network setups, and yet through all of this, I am wondering where they will make time to truly stick to games. Philips and 3DO attempted the mulitmedia all-purpose approach and look where it got them. Aside from the DVD aspect, I really think Sony should avoid spreading theirselves out so thin with catering to every aspect of the market...at some point, a kink in their strategy is going to show and that's going to give Sega and Nintendo the edge in order to maintain their awareness and strength in the market. PlayStation came away as the number one system and hopefully they'll do it again, it's just too early to tell. Oh, but back to your question...just tell them 'whatever' or something, you can't really convince anyone who's made up their mind when it comes to consoles (just try convincing a PC gamer why consoles in many ways are better and you'll see what I mean).
