The latest issue of Oracle Magazine is up and in what will hopefully be a sign of the future, it includes a number of columns and articles on Java.  First is an editorial from Editor-in-Chief Tom Haunert who shares some insight into the long-standing relationship that Oracle has had with Java. Next up is a Oracle Technology Network Chief Justin Kestelyn's Community Bulletin entitled: Java Evolves.  And finally, Java Champion Adam Bien's feature on Java EE 6: Simplicity by Design

JavaOne in Brazil, currently taking place in Sao Paolo, is one event I'd love to attend. I once heard "father of Java" James Gosling talk about Java developers throughout the world. He observed that there were good developers everywhere. It was not the case, he said, that that the really good developers are in one place and the not-so-good developers are in another. He encountered excellent developers everywhere. Then he paused and said that the craziest developers were definitely the Brazilians. As anyone who knows James would realize, this was meant as high praise. He said the Brazilians would work through the night on projects and were very enthusiastic and spontaneous - features that Brazilian culture is known for.

Brazilian developers are responsible for creating one of the most impressive uses of Java ever - the applications that run the Brazilian health services. Starting from scratch they created a system that enables an expert doctor in Rio to look at an X-Ray of a patient near the Amazon and offer advice. One of the main architects of this was Java Champion Fabinane Nardon the distinguished Brazilian Java architect and open-source evangelist.

As she writes in her blog:

"In 2003, I was invited to assemble a team and architect a Public Healthcare Information System for the city of São Paulo, the largest in Latin America, with 14 million inhabitants. The resulting software had 2.5 million of lines of code and it was created, from specification to production, in only 10 months. At the time, the software was considered the largest J2EE application in the world and was featured in several articles, as this one. As a result, we won the Duke's Choice Award in 2005 during JavaOne, the largest development conference in the world. At the time, Sun Microsystems make a short documentary about our work."

"In 2007, a lightning struck twice and I was again invited to assemble a new team and architect an even larger information system for healthcare. And thus I became CTO and one of the founders of Zilics Healthcare Information Systems.

"In 2010, I started to research and work on Cloud Computing technology and became leader of the LSI-TEC Cloud Computing group. LSI-TEC is a research laboratory in the University of Sao Paulo, one of the best in Brazil. Thus, I became one of the ghost writers behind the popular Cloud Computing Twitter @the_cloud."

• Java SE Embedded run circles around Android: Oracle's Bob Vandette has published a lengthy blog comparing the performance of Android 2.2 (Froyo) with the latest Java SE Embedded release.  In his detailed writeup, he compares the two virtual machines using a series of benchmarks that show Java SE Embedded coming out ahead each time, and by a substantial factor of 2X-3X.

If you didn't get a chance to attend the Technical General Session at JavaOne last week, Oracle's Janice Heiss has penned an exceptionally detailed summary of the key topics and announcements.  In her words:

The JavaOne 2010 General Technical Session, held Tuesday afternoon, left little doubt that the Java platform is alive, kicking, and heading into new territory with plenty of energy and brain power.

The article goes on to cover key topics such as future trends for the Java SE platform including key areas of emphasis such as modularity, serviceability, performance, multi-language support and more. The article then goes on to discuss key areas of focus for the Java EE platform and concludes with a discussion around the future of embedded and mobile devices, including Oracle's focus on advancing the Java ME platform and bringing together Java and the Web.  Read more here!

Last week at JavaOne, Java Developer Community Lead Tori Wieldt caught up with Java TV experts Bill Sheppard and Ronan McBrien.  In this short techcast, Bill and Ronan discuss some of the many ways Java is being used in TV devices, key TV standards, and more. 

The energy level here at the San Francisco Hilton is electric as JavaOne 2010 has officially kicked off!  The first technical sessions kicked off this morning and there is a huge amount of anticipation around the JavaOne Opening keynote tonight.  If you were not able to join us live here in San Francisco, there are a couple of ways that you can follow-along from afar.  First, Oracle Technology Network is streaming 3-4 hours of live interviews (see schedule) throughout the week with technologists from Oracle and Oracle partners.  In addition, there will also be live streams for all of the keynotes available at the same URL.  So grab a beverage of your choice, sit back, and enjoy the show!

Excitement continues to build over JavaOne 2010 and the agenda continues to get more exciting as well!  We have just announced that Ray Kurzweil will be speaking during the Day 4 "Java Frontier" Keynote on Thursday September 23rd.

"Ray Kurzweil has been described as "the restless genius" by the Wall Street Journal, and "the ultimate thinking machine" by Forbes. Inc. magazine ranked him #8 among entrepreneurs in the United States, calling him the "rightful heir to Thomas Edison," and PBS included Ray as one of 16 "revolutionaries who made America," along with other inventors of the past two centuries."
