MoveOn identifies candidates who are leading contenders in key races to recommend for your support. These are moderate candidates with real potential to take or hold key congressional seats in 2000. MoveOn makes donation easy for you by providing a simple "conduit" for your contributions. With one secure online credit card transaction or by writing a single check, you can immediately make your contributions to several campaigns. We take care of all the paperwork by transmitting word of your contribution, and the FEC required contributor information, to each campaign. All funds go entirely to the individual campaigns in the amounts you specify.

Mike Honda (D)
for California's 15th Congressional District
Open Seat
Mike Honda is running for the open seat vacated by Rep. Tom Campbell (R), in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley. Honda has a record of over 35 years in public service, as a Peace Corps volunteer, classroom teacher, Stanford researcher, principal, planning commissioner, school board member, County Supervisor, and Member of the State Assembly. Although Honda won almost 10,000 more votes than his opponent James Cunneen in the primary election, this race is considered a toss-up. Mike Honda needs your support.

Roger Kahn (D)
for Georgia's 7th Congressional District

Roger Kahn is running an impressive campaign against impeachment manager Bob Barr, who survived a surprisingly tight re-election bid in 1998 after outspending a little-known challenger 100-to-1. Kahn is a well-respected business and civic leader. He is President and CEO of the PGA Tour Radio Network located in Atlanta. Early polling shows Kahn is within striking distance of defeating Barr, but it will take your significant support to win in November. With your help, Kahn promises to restore honor and dignity to the 7th Congressional District seat, focusing on people’s hopes and dreams rather than their fears and prejudices.

Rep. Elaine Bloom (D)
for Florida's 22nd Congressional District

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D)
for New York's 4th Congressional District
Incumbent
Carolyn McCarthy was a mother, wife, and nurse until the December 1993 Long Island Railroad tradegy that took the life of her husband and five others, and gravely wounded her son. McCarthy took her grief and turned it into a national campaign for stronger gun laws. When her Congressman voted to repeal the assault weapons ban, McCarthy ran against him and stunned the establishment by winning. Since then, McCarthy has served as a national symbol that ordinary citizens can make a difference. But she was the first Democrat in a generation to win her district, and the NRA has vowed to beat her. After surviving a scare in the 1998 elections, we must support Carolyn McCarthy to keep her voice in Congress.

Barney Brannen (D)
for New Hampshire's 2nd District
Opposing Rep. Charles Bass (R)

School board chairman Barney Brannen is running the strongest challenge incumbent Republican Congressman Charlie Bass has ever faced. Bass was elected to Congress with the Gingrich "revolution" of 1994, but has never received more than 53% of the vote. The district is trending Democratic, and President Clinton won the district by 12% in 1996. Bass voted to impeach President Clinton, and received an award from the Christian Coalition for his "courageous" vote. Bass talks like a moderate when he's in the district, but in Washington he votes again and again along partisan lines. If Brannen continues his momentum with the help of your support, he will win this important seat.

Linda Chapin (D)
for Florida's 8th Congressional District
Open Seat
County Clerk and former county Chairwoman Linda Chapin is running for the House seat to be vacated by impeachment manager Bill McCollum, who is running for U.S. Senate. This Orlando-based district is trending Democratic, and while Chapin is running in a clear field, the three GOP candidates face a contentious primary and are all courting support from ultra-conservatives in the party. Linda Chapin is known as a savvy and dedicated public official who delivers great results for the community. As a nationally targeted race, the GOP nominee will be very well funded. Governor Tom Carper of Delaware is running a strong challenge to the incumbent Senator William Roth, in what is sure to be the most expensive and hotly contested Senate race in Delaware history. With an impressive record as two-term governor, Carper enjoys broad public support and an early lead in the polls. The incumbent Roth, as finance chairman, will be able to raise impressive sums for his campaign war chest. Tom Carper needs your support to be competitive. State Rep. Susan Davis (D)
for California's 49th Congressional District
Opposing Rep. Brian Bilbray (R)

State Representative Susan Davis is challenging incumbent Brian Bilbray in San Diego, giving him the race of his life. In the March 7 primary, Bilbray spent more cash, but only outpolled Davis by four percent. Bilbray's vote for impeachment did not sit well in San Diego, and he has little else to show for his time in Washington. Bilbray claims to be a moderate, but adheres to the party line in Washington. Susan Davis, with a tremendous record of achievement in health care and education reform, is widely respected in San Diego and has a great shot at taking this House seat, with your support.

Susan Bass Levin (D)
for New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District
Opposing Rep. James Saxton (R)
Popular Mayor of Cherry Hill, Susan Bass Levin is running against Jim Saxton, who led the task force that prepared Newt Gingrich’s Contract for America. Levin is running a grassroots-style race, building on her natural base of support in Cherry Hill. Named by New Jersey Monthly as one of the 50 most interesting people in the state, Susan Bass Levin is an independent-minded leader who will fight for our interests, not special interests. Her opponent is ultra-conservative – voting for impeachment, against gun safety, and against a woman’s right to choose. Levin’s aggressive campaign in this swing district has made this race one of the most competitive in the country. She needs our support.

Snohomish County Councilman Rick Larsen is running for Congress in Washington's 2nd Congressional District, which will be vacated by retiring Rep. Jack Metcalf (R). Republicans concede that this is probably their single most vulnerable open seat this year. Rick Larsen is a well-regarded native son, with a strong record of public-service achievement. Bill Nelson (D)
for U.S. Senator from Florida
Opposing Representative Bill McCollum (R)
State Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson is running for retiring Republican Senator Connie Mack's seat in Florida. His opposition includes Rep. Bill McCollum who hopes to trade on his high-profile role as impeachment manager to get into the U.S. Senate. A Yale graduate, Bill Nelson has served three terms in the Florida state House and five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Nelson is running a strong race and has a good shot at winning this important seat.

Scotty Baesler (D)
for Kentucky's 6th Congressional District

As Representative, Baesler was the only member of the Kentucky delegation voting against impeachment. State Senator Adam Schiff (D)

Opposing Representative James Rogan (R)
Adam Schiff, a California State Senator, has announced his candidacy opposing former impeachment House Manager, James Rogan. This race has become symbolic for the impact of impeachment on congressional politics, and the far-right is working hard to save Rogan through extensive national fund raising. Governor Mel Carnahan (D)
for U.S. Senator from Missouri
Opposing Senator John Ashcroft (R)
Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan is running for Senate, challenging ultra-conservative Senator John Ashcroft in 2000. Carnahan has been one of the most successful and innovative chief executives in Missouri's history, with a focus on schools, expanded services for seniors, improved health care for children, and lower taxes for working families. The incumbent, John Ashcroft has been one of the far-right's most dogmatic voices, rigidly adhering to a narrow ideological agenda. He was a strong voice for impeachment and played a key role in blocking consideration of censure in the Senate. In fact, in a recent study of congressional voting records, the highly respected National Journal rates Ashcroft as tied for the most extreme right wing member of the U.S. Senate, even farther to the right than Jesse Helms.

Rep. Rush Holt (D)
for New Jersey's 12th Congressional District
Incumbent
Freshman Representative Rush Holt, a physicist by background, is a great example of the type of citizen representative we hope becomes more common in Washington. Representative Holt ran an underdog campaign against the toughest of opponents and won, partly due to anti-impeachment backlash. The former incumbent, Mike Pappas was an outspoken supporter of Ken Starr and impeachment, once even going as far as singing "Twinkle, twinkle, Kenneth Starr" on the House floor in honor of the prosecutor. Representative Holt has been targeted by the conservative fund raisers for the 2000 election, and needs our support to retain his seat.

Nancy Keenan (D)
for Montana's At-Large Congressional District
Opposing Representative Rick Hill (R)

As Montana's 11-year Superintendent of Public Instruction, Nancy Keenan has consistently been the top vote getter in state-wide elections. She's also served three sessions in the Montana House of Representatives. The arch-conservative incumbent, Rick Hill, was a vocal supporter of impeachment and is a darling of the Christian Coalition. Pulling from the right-wing playbook, Hill began his campaign against Ms. Keenan with personal attacks. However, facing health problems and a tough opponent, Rep. Hill announced his withdrawl from the race, making this an open seat. Nancy Keenan is widely respected and has a great shot at taking Montana's only congressional district, with your support.

Jean Elliott Brown (D)
for Florida's 16th Congressional District
Opposing Representative Mark Foley (R)
Jean Elliott Brown, a successful businesswoman in West Palm Beach, Florida, was disgusted by the partisan politics dominating Washington during the impeachment process. She worked with MoveOn during the anti-impeachment campaign, presenting petitions to her Representative, Mark Foley, and was even less impressed with him and his response to constituents. Jean is now the leading opponent to Congressman Foley and has raised significant funds to begin an aggressive campaign. Jean is one of us -- an ordinary citizen fed up with politics as usual. Moreover, Jean and her husband Bill are Internet savvy and will undoubtably break important new ground in using the Internet to manage the campaign, communicate with supporters, and organize volunteers.
