Best of Linux

MailStudio
E-mail - Servers

As I mentioned last week, I can't bear to be separated from my e-mail. In years past, I was able to telnet to my service provider and read messages from wherever I might be stationed, but no more. Seems that many ISPs don't allow such access these days, for any number of security reasons. I could configure an e-mail client on every machine I might use, but that can get messy. It can also make the owner of the borrowed computer downright hostile.

I can't really blame administrators for cutting off telnet access -- I suppose this is the easiest way to ensure system security. If you tend to the care and feeding of an e-mail server you can use Mail Studio to give your users easy remote access to their messages without placing the security and stability of your servers on the firing line.

MailStudio gives e-mail readers access to their messages via a Web based interface. In addition to regular plain text messages, access to MIME-encoded attachments such as images and other enclosures is supported. The program works as an extension to your existing POP3 e-mail services, so there's no need to replace or upgrade your existing working infrastructure to accommodate this program -- MailStudio merely gives your users one more way to access their e-mail.

The entire MailStudio setup can be configured through a Web-based administrative control panel, complete with detailed logging information on who's accessing the Web mail server. To give you (not to mention your customers) peace of mind, there's even an option for secure login and reading with cookie encryption or SSL.

Finally, MailStudio includes a few extras that even the popular free Web-based e-mail providers don't have -- yet. These include an instant messaging client and threaded discussion forums. The latter may come in handy to provide support and network status updates to your customers. No matter how you configure MailStudio, your faithful users will appreciate the added convenience and flexibility this program offers.
